Traded in the perch deceiver on wire leader for Musky for serendipity's and bead heads on 2lbs tippet going for browns in the Ogden River.
Fish are stacked up in the deep holes, as the water is very low, and very very clear. Caught (and released) 6 on Sat, with the biggest being about 14".
Sunday had 2 strikes, but very slow.
The browns are starting to go to the beds, so if wading...don't step in the spawning beds...nuff' said.

How was the action for white fish. They are great fighters and they usually stack up in the deep holes as well. I have not fished the ogden for years. Maybe it is time to start.

I have not seen or caught white fish on the Ogden before. The same for the South Fork of the Ogden.
I do catch them on the Weber a lot though.

Had no white fish action, and it may be that some of the stacked fish were whitefish... they just did not hit.

When I catch whitefish on the South Fork they are consitantly bigger than the ones I pull from the Weber. I have caught whites on the South Fork up to 23 inches and pushing 4 pounds. My brother and I saw some stacked up in a hole easily over 24". These things where monsters. I catch them in both the Ogden and Weber using size 16 prince weighted. I do best weighted so it gets down to them. It is there spawn right now so look for rainbows, cutthroat and even small browns behind the spawing pods. Unlike trout, whites do not make redds, they just release into the water. From one hole on the Weber I can easily pull out 12-14 whites (usually over 16 inches) in an hour. These fish are underated, believe it or not, they are a member of the trout family and really the only native species left in most streams. They are a good indicator of stream health. As the whites dissappear look for other species to follow.

Thanks Katghoti,
I probably got no whitefish cuz I wasn't deep enough. Next time out I will target the whitefish, for they sound like a great fight on the fly rod.

I grew up about a mile from the Ogden, and have fished it since I was 6 with my dad. I have caught very few whites.... maybe 20 that entire time. On the South Fork I consistantly catch large ones.
I would have to agree, Prince usually does the trick for them, but I have mixed success using a prince for the browns. The Ogden River brown trout loves Hares Ears more than anything.
I tie mine a little different. I use very light hares ear dubbing with silver ribbing, and a silver bead. They love it!

I usually get a mix of browns and whites with a prince as well. I have caught a few whites with a hare's ear on a tadem rig, but the majority are on the prince. I to have developed a fly for the South Fork the browns and rainbow love. It is like a hare's ear, but lighter, I use a gold wire wrap, turkey wing case, and a red bead head. I have caught a couple of whites with it, but the browns and bows love it.
As for cooking whites, smoke 'em. They are great smoked. Other than than, cook them as normal. When I ate them, they were cooked in butter and fileted. They have a mild taste to them. Some people pickle them as well. I like 'em this way as well. Some think they are so good, they started a business. They don't get much respect from trout fishermen because they are plain, but they have saved fishing trips for me. A deep bend in the rod, a good fight. Just don't throw them on the banks, put them back. It is against the law to chuck them on the bank since they are a game fish.
