Full Version: Looking for tackle recommendations for Upper Provo around Thanksgiving

All,

I'll be up at my parent's house in Midway for Thanksgiving weekend. I wanted to fish the upper Provo (Below Jordenelle but above the bridge in Heber). I'm not a fly fisherman so last time I was up my cousin set me up with a Panther Martin knock off in a copper color. This year I plan on being a little more prepared. I'm still not ready to go in for fly fishing gear, I'll be sticking with my 4lb spinning gear.

I've already stocked up on Panther Martin's in both copper and silver and a couple of small kastmasters. Does anyone have any other lure recommendations? I've heard that rapala's in a brown trout pattern are good but are those the floating or sinking variety and what sizes are recommended? What about the little tubes?

I moved out of Utah when I was 16 and prior to that most of my fishing was with bait so I am a little out of sorts with trout lures. Almost all of my trout have come on worms, real flies, or grasshoppers.

PS. I'd be happy to share all I know about Surf and Saltwater fishing in exchange for some help. (I'm in San Diego now)

My family has a tradition of fishing up there every year on thanksgiving. Most often we fish from the Charleston bridge down to Deer Creek. There are usually a pretty good number of big bows in that stretch of river that time of year. We usually drift velveeta below a couple of split shot but have had success with spinners and rapalas too. I like the gold and black rapalas in countdown, that allows you to fish several depths depending on how long you let it sink before you start reeling. The sinking tend to get hung up on the bottom when fishing rivers and can be an expensive loss. Countdown can have that problem too if you're not careful. I guess floating would work well in a river as most holes aren't really that deep. I know the rapalas really get the browns going but not as sure about the rainbows. I've always loved the gold bladed panther martin with the black body with yellow spots. If you want to try a fly without fly gear you could also try a glo bug or other egg imitator below a couple of split shot as the rainbows are pretty loose. (Is it just me or does it seem like the rainbows have several spawning periods every year in deer creek?)

YOU GET TO USE RAPALAS BLACK N GOLD COUNT DOWN #5,S. CAST TO HEAD OF HOLES LET IT SINK WHILE REALING IN SLACK LINE TWITCH ROD TIP ABOUT AND INCH OR TWO IN 5 SECOND INTERVELLS. WHILE REALING JUST GET LINE TO COME TIGHT WITH LURE AND THEN TWITCH. THEN LET IT SINK A LITLE WHILE CURRENT BRING LURE TO YOU. THE LURE NEVER SWIMS! ITS PRESSENTED LIKE AN INJURED BAIT FISH DRIFTING IN THE CURRENT AS ITS DIEING. THE TWITCH WILL TELL THE FISH IT IS STILL GOOD TO EAT. BE READY IVE SEAN BROWN COME CLEAR ACROSSED THE RIVER TO GET. THEY WILL COME. AND THAT TIME OF YR THE SPAWNING BROWNS FROM DEER CREEK WILL BE UP IN THERE TO DROP.

Guys,

Thanks for all the input. I actually bought a chinese made fly combo
for $15 at my local tackle shop. They were trying to get rid of them. They were originally $50 combos. So it looks like I will get a chance to drag some nymphs as well.

I'll keep an eye on this forum and if I actually catch anything (I plan on fishing at least 3 different days so the probability is high) I'll post some pics here.

PS. If any of you plan on heading to California this summer, do yourself a favor and pack one of your trout rods lined with 4-6lb test and fish the surf in So. Cal. You'll be glad you did! sdfish.com has lots of good info!!!
