Around here (utah) theres alot of powerbait used, the popular colors are rainbow, chartruce, spring green, orange, lemon twist, lime twist, then one of my favorites is turbo dough in green/yellow swirls, sounds like he talked you into some gulp worms also, i have heard good things about them, and i bed that its a ball using that little icefishing rod for these bigger fish

When you describe using a 3 foot rod, are you describing some sort of kids rod or an ice fishing rod? I have used a 5.x footer and thought that was short, and I often use a 6 footer. Could it have been a typo? How do you make it work right- be able to get enough to land the fish without damaging your rig?

[cool]Powerbait does work great for trout. The problem is that during a day's fishing, the fish get finicky regarding color, and sometimes, even brands of doughbait. If you want to get serious about trout fishing, you'll need at least three brands of bait--Berkeley, Crave, and Sierra Gold. As for colors, just think about all the colors in the rainbow and all colors combined and mixed. And you'll need a brand new tackle box or bag to carry all the jars you'll wind up buying. Be sure to use proper lifting techniques when you pick up all those jars, or better yet, buy yourself a forklift to load them in your pick-up. There will also be financial repercussions. After spending all your available cash and maxing out your credit cards, you'll have to give up such luxuries as food, electricity and a place to live. Just make sure you keep a few bucks to fill up the gas tank to drive to your favorite trout lake. And you will definitely be prepared--you'll have every kind of trout doughbait under the sun, all colors and flavors--everything from lemon/lime sparkle swirl to pina colada/Jack Daniels combination blender surprise. The trout don't have a chance--you are ready to rock! All day long you try everything in your pallet-sized tote bag--even mixing and matching different brands and colors. But you don't even get a nibble. Then, at the end of the day, some guy walks past with a huge stringer of rainbow trout, the kind with shoulders like NFL linebackers! "Hey," you call out,"what kind of Powerbait did you use to catch those fish?" The guy just laughs. "Powerbait? I don't need no stinkin' Powerbait!" And then he starts to walk away. You call out to him: "Please! Tell me what you were using for bait!" The guy turns around and says: "I caught 'em all on nightcrawlers." Nightcrawlers? Now you are really Confused. "Nightcrawlers? How much do they cost?" The guy just smirks."Cost? Didn't cost me anything! Just went to the local golf course last night and grabbed a bunch." At this point, you totally lose it, and start howling like a loon. You have spent a fortune on bait that has been a bust, all your money is gone, and you have no place to live. The moral of the story? Stick to stripers, StriperKing--you'll live longer!

you make a good point, it is foolish to blow hard earned money on products that wont produce for you,

and truthfuly you dont need to, nor should. I mean it is great for those of us who can afford all the toyz and I realy and truly am happy for them. for those of us who cant, your best bet is to buy one or two of severl types of spinners spoons lures crankbaits and soft plastics. Put them to work and when you find something that produces for you, stick to what works

make sure you let your family know about it, there are several gift giving days a year (christmas, birthdays, fathers day) that they go nutz over trying to find you just the right gift and usualy you end up with a T shirt or a tie, when you could have received a couple three lures or a bag or two of your favorite soft plastic.... and best part is you dont have to go back for returns.

so start droppin hints now, save sum bucks and time this holiday season....[Wink]

Hi im really happy to see you your catching well off power bait. Me myself i dont really care for the stuff for the simple reason in my oppinion its hard on the trouts digestive system. And they probley die after stealing that glob of that wonderfull stuff from your hook.Just think if all icemen were useing it. Did you ever try a meal worm and say a swedish pimple or a small russian hook? Thats my secret shhhh oh yeah I just dont like to have power bait in the fish i eat thats all. On the other hand when its frying up you sure get a nice browning effect on your trout yep a nice glowing blaze orange and smells like power bait dam tasty eh? Tongue

When I go trout fishing, I carry a large variety of Powerbait. Not that I want to catch a fish on it but just to see if there are planters/ stockers there or if there are some good holdovers or natives.

My kit has about 20 colors. As soon as I have been through all the colors without a bite, I will then resort to my good ole nightcrawlers or crickets so that I can find a good prize for the dinner table.

I have been known to fling a fly or two as well.

What area do you plan to fish the Powerbait at?? I may have some advice on colors for different regions.[cool]
