Can you use an ATV on the ice at Fish Lake? I was told by someone that snowmobiles were the only thing they let you use there. Is this true?

NO, you can use your ATV...but, many years the lake gets a pretty good amount of slush on top of the ice. When the lake has all the slush on it, it can be a real pain in an ATV...scary too!

About 10 or 12 years ago I watched a guy wreck on a three wheeler up there.
He'd had a few barley pops. He was riding his buddy's high performance trike, and obviously shouldn't have been. He watched his buddy do some high speed maneuvers and thought he could do the same. He hit a pressure ridge that was about three and a half feet tall at maybe 25 mph. Brakes locked, and skidding out of control. He went ass over tea cups and the trike went with him. He suffered a concussion and had one ear almost completely avulsed (ripped off). He tried to tell everybody around that he was "fine". Then his buddy yelled at him something to the effect "The heck you are, your ear's been ripped clear the f___ off". Not the best thing to tell someone who is about to go into shock.
I've never heard that ATVs were illegal, but sometimes they're tough to use in deep snow up there. One year I read the DWR report that said not to bring wheeled vehicles only snowmobiles. I went two days later expecting deep snow, but found absolutely no snow around the lake. I had to carry my gear in the sled about 20 yards rather than try to drag it through the sagebrush. I guess it was Wyoming snow. You know the kind that never melts, just wears out from blowing all over the state. ( I've heard they only get about 2 inches up there for the whole year. It just piles up in one spot for a couple of days and then blows someplace else only to pile up there. )
Bring on the ice.

I'm off to Fish Lake in the first week of Feb. With my reservation info, I got a packet including an "Information for Your Winter Visit" pamphlet. It states: "In the wintertime, you may use ATV's to access the lake for ice fishing, but other recreational riding is prohibited by the Forest Service." You can ride to the ice from a parking site or from your cabin, on the lake (if you don't get stuck), and that's about it.
