If you are not sure where the iced over Huntington is read the posts for directions.
My son and I went 80 miles in the wrong direction yesterday before we found that there are Two Huntington Reservoirs.
It was about noon when we finally made it to the right one.
There is a little open water in some spots but 4" of clear ice and up to 6" of drifting snow on the lake now.
We fished from about 12:30 to dark. We both picked up 4 or 5 Tiger Trout that went about 16" each. We missed many more because of the very light bite. Not a bad day after we finally found the place!

One is called Huntington Res. and the other is called Huntington North Res.
There is also the Huntington Game ponds.

Bummer Dude [crazy] ! It would be a while before the lower one by Huntington city has enough ice on it. The one in question is sometimes refered to as Mammouth - I'm not sure why both seem to have the same name though.

open water on huntington res? you are talking about the one on top of fairview canyon right?
i dont think there would be any open water there.. what you might have seen was blue or some call it black ice.. clear ice and the snow had just blowen off a spot or two..
when i was there friday the whole lake was solid ice from one side to the other..

Yea, open water would be hard to imagine at this point - we've only had colder weather since Friday. I did see a few spots of "open" water by the inflows(springs and creek) but, they were only a few feet across and only a few inches deep.

My old map refers to both as just Huntington Reservoir. But my new map list them as Huntington North and Mammouth Reservoir. Mammouth was renamed after they found wooly mammouth bones when they reenforced the dam a few years back.

The places that you are talking about are still open. Very small but open. Not a good place to enter the ice at.
I expected to find the ice over 4" by now but that is what we recorded yesterday. We were by the dam so it may get thicker as you get away from the dam.
We were in 13' of water with the surface temps of the water at 35*.
It was cold and the wind was blowing. We had a shelter and made good use of it. A toasty 50* inside. We tried several jigs but the best action was anything tipped with crawler. Wax and meal worms only found luke warm interest. We didn't get a bite on shinners.
The Tigers are big and fat. It looked like they were in spawning color. No camera this trip dang it!
Now if Strawberry will freeze over, life will be good!

If you check any water in any ice hole it will be from 34 to 37* if it was 32 or less the hole lake would freeze.

So in your opinion, Hunington would be safe for fishing this coming saturday? This is a distance for me to travel so I'm hoping to be certain I can fish before I make the journey.

It was safe last Saturday and I am sure the ice is alot thicker by now!

It was fine Monday afternoon. The ice is still about 4" thick which is all that Rockport had all last winter.
It is good clear ice with some snow covering it now.
Enter from the edge of the dam by the parking lot and you will not have a problem.
Look for the fish in the bottom of the water column. No more than 2' off of the bottom.
White Whatta-Crickets tipped with a small piece of night crawler was best for me. The bite is so light that you may not even feel it. Just watch your line for any movement and set the hook.
