Full Version: Hard Water Sports Besides Ice Fishing?

Okay, winter is finally here! I fished the Berry on the Friday after Thanksgiving and had a blast with my son. When I pulled the boat out of the water I fogged the motor and put everything away for the winter. It is now time for hard water sports!

I know that there are a bunch of people on this site that live for ice fishing but I am not one of them. Sure I have fished through the ice several times at the Berry and 20 years ago we used to ice fish at night for Crappies on Willard. It just doesn't do much for me when I know that fresh powder is falling at Alta.

Skiing is what really gets me stoked in the winter time. I have done it for over 40 years and it still makes me feel like a kid when I know there will be face shots and white smoke. Plus we are so lucky to have world class skiing right here in our backyard!

So who else out there puts the rods away for the winter and pursues other hard water sports? Post up and lets see what we do for fun in the winter. If anyone wants to hook up and ski sometime just let me know. Me and my son can be found on any Sunday attending "church" at Alta.

I won't put the rod away for any reason but watching my boy play ice hockey. He plays for the DCI high school team, they won again last night 6-3 Wahoo! he scored the first goal of the game!

[font "Impact"][#ff4040][size 3]I never put my rods away! There is always some fishing to be done. I do however go hit the slopes and get a little snowboarding in every once in a while. I also still hunt ducks, and this year can hunt geese until the end of january![sly][/size][/#ff4040][/font]

You'll find me worshipping in the shadow of the Devil's Castle on almost every Sunday as well as every other day I can.

When I put my long rods away Iget my short rod out and look for a good bobspieal of curling.[Smile]

I use to have a problem deciding between snowmobiling or ice fishing. I have skied a few times but it was too dangers for me, going down a hill in-between tree with slick boards on my feet. I had to stop snowmobiling for the same reason I couldn’t let up on the throttle and it started to hurt more ever time I would get thrown off. There’s something about trees and snowmobiles too they don’t go together very well either. With a family it was getting expensive too. I spend most of the summer working outside and most of the winter in the office and need something to do so I have taken up riding my snowmobiles on the ice to get to my favorite spot. Now I have a boat, I don’t get it out and use it until the winter on lake that have not froze over yet when I’m not ice fishing. I need to work harder in the summer then I could go snow skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, soft water fishing one each day of the week in the winter. One can always wish.

[cool] You gotta love it fishhound! Looking at the main Castle apron last Sunday and anticipating more snow to fill it in. There are so many places up there that are a truly religious experience!

I never put my long rod away. I like flyfishing all winter. And for me, I would rather be walking around on a stream anticipating the next hole than sitting on a frozen lake staring at a ice hole. Sorry, I couldn't resist.[Wink]And even if I can only catch whitefish I enjoy it. I think whitefish are underrated. They are not much on looks and they don't jump much (allthough I have seen whitefish jump)but they are pound for pound the strongest fish I have ever caught and they seem to stay more active and less lethargic than trout in the winter..

I'm a snow skiing junky. I usually get a seasons pass for Beaver Mountain because it's close and it's cheap. However, I grew up skiing this place. Recognize the peak?

The picture's from 20 years ago. I've since ditched the Levis and the mid-entry boots, but I still ski hard and get airborne whenever I can.

That looks like Brighton to me, on the West side.

Nope... Needles Peak. The first peak south of Mount Ogden Peak at Snowbasin.

Those were the good old days! Spread eagles, back scratchers, daffy's and helicopters. Oh and a good set of knees to land them all. I need to get up to Snow Basin, I hear it is spectacular with all of the improvements they did for the Olympics.

How about the snow we have now! Yee haa. A friend told me that yesterday was almost epic! I had to stay at work.[unsure]

I love it, but it ain't the same place I grew up skiing. Instead of hot dogs, burgers, and fries, it's sushi, prime rib and Cabernet Sauvignon. Get this... they have fancy rock walkways when you get off the lift/tram and they're heated so the ice/snow melts so you won't slip. They even have a small ice skating rink at the top of Middle Bowl (Needles) next to the lodge. They don't have night skiing, but you can take the tram up, eat a fine dinner, and do a little ice skating afterwords. I used to hike my ars off from Porcupine past Mount Ogden over to John Paul, Allen's Peak, and No Name, and now the John Paul Express will take you right to it, with a lodge at the top to boot. It's an amazing place. I still have a few little known stashes of fresh pow'.

I definetly fish all winter--fly and now ice-- but I have been an avid snowboarder for 8 or 9 years now. Usually Brighton or the Bird (sundance weekday season pass during the lean married years). Me and my buddies used to go down to fairview canyon and hike the backcountry for fresh turns when there was no new snow at the resorts. I also like to just go for hikes in the hills. This is about the best time of year for viewing wildlife. The deer and elk are down low and there are lots of bald eagles that winter in Utah. This morning I saw 17 rocky mountain bighorn sheep (three full curl rams) hanging out just above the new cedar hills golf course.
