Who here goes out in the mountains and cuts there own Christmas tree? 2 years ago we went down by Salina and cut one and had a blast. This year we tried to get a permit in the Manti area and was not able to get one because they sold out. We are thinking about heading back down by Salina again on the Fishlake NF area and cutting a tree. Last time we cut one up Gooseberry area but I was wondering if anyone knows of a area that may be better or can suggest an area to look.

Thanks for the help.

My family used to go every year until they made it hard to get the tree tags. My only suggestion is make sure no matter where you go, get a forest service tree tag. The fine is hefty if you dont have one. We usually go out on the south slope of the Uintas. Get our tree tags in Duchesne. But Heber district also sells tree tags too. BTW, does anyone know how much they are these days?

The Fishlake FS sells them for $5.

Hunting Christmas trees has become a family tradition for my family. We started a few years ago andthe outting takes on greater importance every year. We usually get them on the Heber district on the Uintah NF but that window of opportuninty has past. You have to stand in line when they sell the permits and they are sold out usually the first day or two. Fortunately for me the outting is even more important to my wife than for me and she does the line and buying. My daughter ocassionally gets a tree on the Evanston district of The Wasatch-Cash NF. But I am not sure if they are available to people other than locals. It might be worth a call to find out.

You just need to know someone who has a little mountain acreage. Then you can go to their property and cut one without a stupid permit.

i actually have some ownership in some mountain property but we do not allow the removal of christmas trees. So I guess that I am going to settle for going down to the fishlake FS area and find me a tree. I hope the weather hold up for Sarturday.

The Evanston District of Wasatch-Cache ALWAYS has plenty of tree permits and anyone can buy them. I guess fewer people know about it, or else think its too far to go. No waiting in line becaues they never sell out. The Maverik in Mountain View is the easiest place to buy them. Then there is a well-plowed graveled road that they keep plowed all year that loops up into the north slope of the uintas. Plenty of trees to choose from. The graveled road takes off just south of Mountainview, and the people at Maverik can give you good directions.

We got ours at the Bear River Lodge. $10 apiece. I would imagine that the road is kinda snowy now, but a couple of weeks ago it was fine.
