ha made ya look !! hehehe

well made the trip up to scofield today.. got there to see ice on the far south end.. it's about 1/4 of the way capped..

so i headed over to cleveland.. got there and looked it's all the way iced up but there is a foot and half of snow there as well.. so thought i would just hit huntington and give it a shot..

should have just went home.. lol

well got to huntington and catfish was just getting ready to head out on the ice.. so i though what the heck i'll give it a try..
so i got all my gear on and out i went..
there was a foot of new snow there so it was a good hike down.. i thought it would get better when i got to the ice ...
WRONG there was about 3 to 4 inches of slush on the ice..
now i had a new problem that i did not know about tell today.. my boots leak if i get in water over 3" deep.. nice now i have wet feet.
the temp was 12* when i got there with the wind gusting to around 30mph it was not warm.. and now with wet feet even colder..
well i did not take my auger down catfish said i could use his power auger when i got down.. lol that worked out as good as the holes in my boots..lol.
he had no problem punching two holes when he got down to the ice.. but when i picked up the auger it would start but just idle..
we found out that you do not put the power auger down air cleaner first in the slush.. can you say solid block of ice over the air cleaner.. ok so after playing with it for a while i finley got a hole cut in the ice..

fished for awhile got some good hit's but miss them bad..
ok now my feet are realy starting to get cold.. so thats it for me heading home..

but this day just keep getting funner and funner.. on the way back to the truck i went through the ice up to my bumm.. i rolled just in time to keep from going all the way through.. i dont know if i hit a soft spot or an old ice hole but now i'm realy wet and have to slog through 1 foot of power snow to get to the truck..
now i know most of you know what happens when it's realy cold and your wet and you add powered snow right.. thats right it sticks to you like glue and makes big ice chuncks stick to you.. by the time i got to the truck i had ice blocks for feet and my gloves got wet trying to get my fat a$$ out of the water thay were blocks of ice as well..

great fun at huntington today glad not all have gone that way this year.. lol

oh yeah got some pic's of scofield.. here ya go

[size 1]Seriously, thanks for the report. Did you drive over the dam and see if the area closest to the dam is frozen? [/size]

I guess it getting time to plan a trip to Scofield thanks for the report. Good thing you live close by. Did you have to thaw out to drive home? Did you get any pictures of you looking like a frosted Popsicle?

Do you think scofield will have safe ice by Saturday? I have some troops together to ice fish this weekend and I am a bit edgy about going through. Slush does not help the ice and it isn't supposed to get any cooler all week.

Sounds harsh Ron. Glad you made it home safely though. Thanks for the update on Schofield. Better luck on your next outing!

Fuzzy,
Sounds like toooooo much fun. I have a couple questions. Do you think you fell through a soft spot or a hole?? Do you think it will be unsafe for a few days now? How long will that slush layer take to freeze if the temps are 12*? I was thinking about going on Saturday but now I might reconsider......What do you think?

Wow Ron, I bet you were sure glad that you live close by!

i'm not sure what i hit to go through the ice.. i do know this it reminded me of something i never wanted to do again.. lol..

ok let's look at it this way.. the ice had slush on it because the new snow on top is pushing down on the ice makeing it sag.. with temp's in the teen's in the day time i can only guess that the temp's are not going to get higher at night.. with only 3 or 4 inches of slush on top the ice and temp's well under freezing i think..
by tomorrow morning the slush will be gone and 5 new inches of ice will be on top the lake..

the sky's are clear here right now and it is only 16* out side here in the valley so i think it's safe to say huntington will be safe after tonight..
it's been cloudy up there for the last 4 nights and clouds hold the heat in.. no clouds no heat.. lot's of ice!!

and i will say i still think it was safe today.. i just steped in the wrong spot is all..

Thanks Ron for the report . Great to have a ice scout down there checking ice for us . I just hate getting wet when it is cold out like that . Good to here all is well .

[cool]Fuzzy, thanks for your sacrifices today for the rest of the board. That really sux about your falling through. Wonder if that's where CBR almost got his shelter through the ice on Saturday due to a hot heater in the shelter?[crazy]

Anyway, thanx for the update on Scofield! Sounds like it should be ready in about a week, eh? Hope the lurkers aren't reading this. Don't wanna see 500 people on the ice next weekend![pirate][pirate]

i'm going to say at lest a week for safe ice on scofield.. so some time in the middle of next week should be getting close..
there was alot of open water there today.

i did not go down by the dam at scofield so dont know what it was like there.. temp 19* there at 10:00 this morning..

Fuzzy,
Thanks for your reply. I still laughing. I hope your right about that slush layer freezing up solid tonight and ice being about 8-10 inches thick by morning. I want to go up saturday and although I don't mind standing in 3 inches of slush but my 6 yr old son doesn't do well in those conditions. And I really don't have any desire to go swimming even if it is just waist deep. Better get fixin your leaky boots. Thanks for the updates, are you planning on heading back up there before saturday?

hey bigcat and CBR i think the kidds would be fine there on the ice.. the slush had a cap of ice on it that would suport me some of the time..
it was one of them deals you take a step and are ok then the next 2 steps you went through and so on.. but some one that was under 100 lbs would not have gone through the crust to start with.. they would just go right over the top of the crust..

well looks like i was Wrong again about it not getting warmer over night..lol
the clouds moved in again last night and it's around 28* here in the valley this morning. hope it got a bit colder up on the lake last night..

Me and a buddy are heading up Friday morn. You got me wondering if we're wasting our time.My buddy is real nervous about ice fishin anyway and he'll never forgive me or even go again if that happens to us! We got a room for Friday night in Mt Pleasant so if worse comes to worse we'll just hangout at the local watering hole in town there and call it good. What do you think the nightime temps are at the lake itself? Sounds like you live nearby somewhere.I need some encouragement here!!

Awesome! I will be up there around 8 AM on Saturday with bassrods and Polokid. Many thanks fuzzy for the scouting and advice.

If you allready got the room, make the trip up the canyon, there are alot of other places to fish if they arnt biting at hunnington, all of which are more enertaning then the triangle lounge.
