Bassrods makes it sound much nicer than it really was. Tincanfsh, Fishcrazy and I arrived right behind Bassrods and crew. I joined the crowd trying to push his truck out of the snow bank, but it was apparent that they were going to have to do some serious digging before they gained their freedom, so i went fishing. I wish that I would have stayed and pushed on his truck and skipped fishing. It was challenging enough going through the deep snow to get to the reservoir, only to have my sled tip over several times in the deep ruts, but it was truly a nightmare from hell when we reached the ice. There has got to be a stronger term than slush, but I don't know the term, so slush will have to suffice. The sleds immediately got wet and then the snow would stick to the bottom of them and make them nearly impossible to pull. I have high boots, but they weren't high enough. Both feet got soaking wet from the slush, but fortunately, they stayed warm until we left about 10:30 AM, Billy and Mike weren't so lucky. We each caught one tiger for our efforts. I did meet Kastmaster out on the ice.

Funny report from bassrods. Too bad you guys had it so rough! At least you didn't get skunked though.

What happened to outdoorsgonewild?

Thanks for the report and it is good to hear you all got out in one piece. It sounds like the conditions were even worse than yesterday, and they were bad enough then. Sorry to hear that the fishing was slow. That makes the conditions even more intolerable.

[cool]Damn! I'm glad I missed out on this expedition. Sounds like a crappy day out there. And, as for the "ice looking like the grand opening crowds at Cabelas," it sounds to me like like the theories are correct about hundreds of lurkers on this board from Utah alone. Also, a member of this board has mentioned on the DWR site within the last week that there's ice on Hunington. Now, not EVERYBODY that was out at Hunington today reads this or the DWR board, but c'mon!

Anyway, glad I wasn't there today. C'mon Scofield, 'da berry, Rockperch, and Mantua HURRY UP AND FREEZE ALREADY!!!!

On the snow sticking to the sled part, a good trick I used was getting some wax for snowboards or skis and waxing the bottom of my jet sled, works like a champ, but I must agree, it was a very bad day fishing, one of the worst in my record books, I dont mind not catching but the conditions up there are really bad.

OGW is gone, generated way too much traffic from a *cough* much nastier demographic and I was having to filter and remove several nasty "filthy" msgs advertising for a much nastier habit than fishing, well, almost nastier. Wink It's a good change though!

Melt ski wax, surf board wax, or even good old paraffin and paint it on with a brush and you'll be glad you did when you're trudging through the tundra. Make sure the bottom of the sled is real warm when you paint it on so it bonds good. You can hit it with a blow dryer afterwords if you want it to bond real good. And watch out for yellow snow.

[cool][#0000ff]Gee...sorry I missed that. But, thanks for asking.[/#0000ff]

Next time I will make sure I invite you so you will not miss the fun...

[cool][#0000ff]Actually, I DID get invites from a couple of different "masochists". I politely declined. My mama drowned all the dumb ones.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Hey, I love ice fishing as much as the next guy...but not if the next guy is Nanook of the North. I prefer to keep my lower extremities warm, dry and functional. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I got a chance to fill my boots on a trip with Kent and Tincanfish last January at Pelican. "Come on TubeDude. That ice will hold you." I no longer have faith in those words of encouragement.[/#0000ff]

Man, you poor unfortunates!!
I think we sometimes forget that Huntington (Mammoth) is up around 9000 feet elevation. That's higher than Strawberry by 1000 feet and even higher than Fish Lake! (I think my elevations are correct or at least close.) And that valley it's in acts like a funnel or venturi with a big wind blowin'.
I think I'll be like TubeDude and check lower elevation lakes in the near future. Even they get pretty Arctic-y as the season progresses.

I think it is closer to 9500 feet and it is cold...

I think you maybe wrong on your elevation. Spillway is at 9014' so it would be closer to 9000' on the ice .

We toughed it out till 12:00, having only caught one fish between the three of us. My buddies also got the case of 'wet feet', so they were more miserable than me. I decided to try something new in the outfit department that kept my feet relatively dry, but not toasty. Since doggonefishin warned me of the slush, I put on my breathable waders as a layer underneath my coveralls, didn't make it too bulky, blocked the wind, but made it a hassle to go to the bathroom. Instead of the slush, how about the term 'Slurpee' for lack of better term. Good to meet you, Kent.
That spray on, no stick food stuff "PAM" works great too. And is a lot easier.

Miserable conditions. I thought I have experience slush on strawberry. THis was the most slush i have had to deal with. Luckily I had my shanty heater and dog to keep me warm and out of the water. Cant wait for closer ice and better conditions.
