DUBUQUE, IA—Iowa officials have announced they've initiated a fishing ban on three areas on the Mississippi River to reduce sauger mortality. Areas affected by the ban include Dubuque, Bellevue and Clinton counties. The ban will last through March 15, 2006.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) biologists say they've noticed a mortality rate of 80 to 85 percent among saugers and believe it's because the fish are being injured during winter fishing.
