Marina Del Rey Anglers will host its 32nd Annual Halibut Derby on April 1 & 2, 2006.
“This year’s halibut extravaganza promises to be bigger and better than all previous
events. It just keeps getting bigger and better every year,” said MDRA Derby Chairman Bob Kissling. Last year over 800 halibut derby anglers competed for over $60,000 of prizes and raffle items. The grand prize winner, John Romanak, received a one week fishing vacation to Punta Colorada on the East Cape, Baja California, including all meals, 3 days of fishing, air fare, transfers to and from airport and hotel and even free filet service. John’s halibut was 33 pounds. The largest halibut was caught by 12 year old Ryan Lambert who swept the youth division with his giant 36 pounder. John and Ryan are both MDRA members, so maybe you should be too.

All proceeds from entry fees go to support the Marina Del Rey Anglers’ Youth Fishing program and the club’s Ocean Resources Enhancement Program which raises and releases juvenile white seabass to help this species re-establish itself as a major Southern California fishery. “We want each participant to know and be proud that your entry fees helped take over 1,100 at risk kids fishing last year and funded our white seabass program which released over 2,800 in 2005 and over 70,000 fish since inception”, said MDRA President Ken Raymond. Prizes for 2006 will include fabulous fishing trips to the East Cape, Mazatlan, Alaska and other great resorts, fishing trips on Southern California sport boats, top quality rods, reels and other tackle. One lucky angler could receive a new Toyota Tundra Truck, sales tax and license included, for the heaviest halibut over 53 pounds compliments of Marina Del Rey Toyota. New trucks have been awarded twice in the previous 4 years!

The Marina del Rey Halibut Derby is the oldest and largest fishing tournament on the West Coast of California. Entry fees are $75 for adults and $35 for youths under 16 years, and this includes a deluxe barbecue dinner and a spectacular awards event at which over $60,000 worth of prizes will be distributed. The entry fee also includes a door prize raffle ticket for a chance to win one of hundreds of prizes. Additional raffle tickets will be on sale. Entry forms will be available at local tackle shops, on the internet at www.halibutderby.com, and Western Outdoor News.

We will also have a team competition. Teams may be comprised of two to four anglers and teams do not necessarily have to fish from the same boat. Just add $25 per individual to enter the team competition.

Be sure to enter the $20.00 Jackpot with big cash payouts going to the three adult anglers weighing in the heaviest “bag weights” based on the biggest halibut per day per angler for the 2 day tournament.
