As some of you know- I'm a map maker (GIS geek). Check out my latest project. 3D maps- On my PC and I can zoom in/out, rotate it, it's pretty cool. Can you say ultimate scouting tool?? LOL - whatcha think?? [unsure]

That is awesome, it would take some time im sure to mark all of the major lakes but well worth it and maybe worth a few bucks if marketed right.

good work

It's actually something we've explored at work, just expensive for the software and takes some time. Still, it's cool to do it for the places I like to fish. I guess for the right price, anything is worth it. [Tongue] It is kinda fun to "fly through" and see the area in 3D.

Pretty cool stuff. It would be cool to have maps like that available, but getting accurate/consistant depth data would be hard.

Many lakes have been mapped out for depth and structure. Depending on your equipment you can get chips for your GPS. Lake Powell, for instance, has been mapped in great detail. I found a couple of canyons to be a little off as far as the entire canyon being a little north or south of where it should be, but once figured out the structures were correct.

I believe Strawberry is one that has good detail. You just have to look up the software your GPS uses, for instance mine uses Navionics, and see what inland lakes are covered.

Those maps are cool. Glad I ran into you today on the lake to know to look. Had thought that was what the bottom looked like from my depth readings as I kicked around in my tube this summer. Now I can show some people at work who don't have depth finders what I was trying to explain to them. Your maps will go a lot farther then my explanation did.

Very cool maps! Do you get your depth and contor info from a store bought maps or how is the data aquired to be able to generate the images? Very cool!

I basically digitize (like tracing electronically) a contour map and enter in the contour into the database. The GIS software does the rest. 3D modeling software then lets me display it and view it in 3D. It's pretty cool. I plan on doing it with all of my favorite spots and lakes. Took about 2 hrs to fully complete that bay.
