I think a FF is far more valuable than any camera system that is currently available. It will tell you depth of water, and depth of fish. It might not tell you when the fishy has your bait in it's mouth, but it is a very valuable tool in your arsenal.

One more vote for the fish finder over the camera.

I'd go with the fish finder, but stay away from the fishin buddy it only has a nine degree cone (which is really only good for icefishing). Most of the other fish finders have a 20 degree cone for the bottom and a 60 degree cone for finding fish. Tehse could be valuable on a pontoon boat or other boat. You can either buy another brand that is portable or make it portable yourself.

I would definately go with the fish finder over the camera. But I would strongly encourage you to spend about $50 more and get a better finder. I used to have a fishing buddy and it was ok for ice fishing but not so good in the boat. I went with the Hummingbird 565 and I love it. I made it portable so I can use it on the ice or in the boat. It has 2 cones so you can see more area and it has a digital realtime which helps a ton. If your stricktly going for an ice fishing rig I would go with the vexilar. They cost more but they would be way better for the ice. There are better finders for the money, But as with everything the more bells and whistles the more they cost.

Elkaholic and fish4fun, glad to see you guys are liking your new humminbirds.
They are sweet machines huh? Definitley not like the humminbirds of the 90's.
I keep dreaming of getting rid of one or bolth of my garmins and getting a couple of the new humminbirds.
Wouldnt even mind repalcing my LCX-15 mt with one of the new 3D 9 series units from humminbird.

The camera is way cool....but a guy gots ta seperate his wants from his needs...I want a camera..but I needs a fish finder!!!...all the camera shows is one depth..with out the fish finder, you do not know that their is a school of cokes at 15 feet.. so your watchen the bottom and thinken that the camera is way cool and the hot spot theives are catchen all them tasty cokes at 15' because they gots a fish finder...HHmm..sounds like ive been their huh...I also have a fish buddy..loved it the first year and thats all the longer it lasted..not sure why? it reads depths but not fishes..so there ya go..ya get what ya pay for..and when youve got that sweet FF...then whoop out the credit card and get that camera, cuz man their COOL![cool]

Another vote for the fishfinder here. I happen to have a fishin buddy and a Humminbird matrix. The buddy is an alright unit, but you might be happier with a more versitile sonar that you could get for around the same money +or- a few dollars.
I tried out a camera last weekend while fishing with kenofnsl and it was really cool. And I wouldn't mind getting one. But like some of the others have brought up, it can be limiting in that you won't get all the info that you could with a finder. Even though I had the camera available, I still used and relied on my Humminbird fishfinder for fishing because it gave me a much better idea of more things below the ice. The camera only had a small window of view of a small area, whereas, the finder gives everything in the entire water column and covers more area of the bottom than the camera could.

I suggest you go with a FF first then perhaps pickup the cam later. Both are very usefull tools. One thing a cam will show you that the ff wont is how badly you can screwing up and scaring off more fish than not when your presentation isnt correct for that particular moment due to the mood of the fishies...

How bout neither. Spend a little more money and get a good sonar. I have a Garmin 250 which I like and the Lowrances are top of the line. But both are more pricey. For the money you can't beat the humminbird 565. It has the features of the high end units for a $200 price tag. Can't beat it.

I will have to agree with the majority. Once you learn how to really read the fish finder, it can be better than the camera. Be sure you get a good quality finder.
The camera is fun. I would never use it to locate fish or structure. I would never use it to see when the fish hits your offering. It can really mess you up with your timing. Use the camera to determine how a fish might react to certain baits. Also it is kinda fun to see whats going on down there but to really be consistant, use your fish finder and instincts.
