The champ and I went to Scofield yesterday (5 January) hoping to pull a few big ones out from under the ice. To our disappointment, we came away skunked and wondering why. We got there early in the morning, when the stars were still tling their last, we moved around quite a bit (drilling over a dozen holes in different places with different water depths), and we tried various lures and baits (tube jigs, airplane jigs, meal worms, minnows, etc.). Sad to say, but in the whole morning, we got two little nibbles and one good bite, which broke off my line (RATS!). When we left around noon, we checked with the other fishermen, and most of them had the same story to tell. We saw only one fish among maybe 50 people trying to catch them.
The ice was about 12 inches thick, and it had a good foot of snow on top of it. Have the fish just gone to sleep under this cozy blanket? I'd love to hear from other BFTers about their experiences at Scofield or their opinions about why things stunk, stank, and stinked there yesterday.
