If you are going before March 1st then I would plan on light tackle:
12 to 15lb line setup.
1 to 2 oz torpedos.
1/8 to 1/4 oz sliding egg sinkers.
#8 and #4 bait hooks.
The deck hands on the boat can help you getting tied up with the appropriate rigg as long as you have the basics on tackle.
Good luck out there and don't forget to get some pics of the trip with your BFT stikers in the pictures somewhere.[cool]

As you probably might know, Rockfish season will open back up on March 1st.
Prepare yourself with the same lighter gear from the previous post just in case they do go for some Calico Bass or other light species and add to it the following:
1 Heavier rod set up with 25 to 30lb test and a full spool on it.
2 or 3 6oz Torpedo sinkers
2 or 3 8oz Torpedo sinkers
Pack of 10 #2 bait hooks
You will be fishing deeper than what you ever have. To start they will be at 240 feet maximum. Once again, the deckhands will get you set up with your tackle on hand.
You may want to have some good nutrition prior to the departure of the boat. You will be doing a lot of reeling in.[cool]

Hey there chomponthis,
You'll be going on the SoCal. I'm going on that boat tomorrow. It's a decent boat but I'm prejudiced as I worked on that boat many years ago and like her design.
You'll probably fish Horseshoe Kelp and most of the best rockpiles that hold fish are no more than 120 feet deep. I fish lighter than TubeN2 generally (but then I'm not the fish producer like he is!!) and with the rockfishing depth limit regs being down only to 180 feet, you may get away with 2 1/2 to 6 ounce sinkers depending on the kelp. Presently we use 2 (morning) to 4 (afternoon) ounce torpedos for drop-shotting for the calicos in 80 to 110 feet of water. lilght-tackle me uses a 3/4 leadhead and fresh dead squid and fish the bottom ....... it just takes a little longer to get to the bottom and more effort to stay there.
Boat leaves at 10am but be there early to get a spot on the stern.
Gonna go to the Fred Hall show? Good idea! Check out the gear, knots used, techniques in seminars, etc.
Good luck,
JapanRon

I will be bringing some more stickers with me to hand out at the show. I will be there Sat and Sunday. If you send me your Cell # in a PM, I can call you and make arrangements as to where to meet.
There will be a few other members there too. Maybe we can get a group photo.[cool]
