Full Version: $1.15 processing fee

I just purchased my 2006 kansas fishing license and not only had to give my SS# but was charged a $1.15 processing fee for it. The clerk said it was to cover the cost of a new system to look for dead beat parents. I not against a system for this but why should the fee be added to hunting and fishing licenses. Giving my SS# to joe blow at the corner store doesn't thrill me either. I don't know if this is the only place the state collects this fee but I think they should collect it where everyone can share the burden. Does any other state have this system?

In CA it only cost 1.15 for the fishing license and about $37 more if you want to use it.[pirate]

We can actually save 1.50 if we buy our license direct from the Fish and Game Dept. Otherwise each license agent will automatically collect the 1.50 as part of the already printed license fee.[unsure]

But does the fee go pay for a system used to track down people who don't pay their child support? This is what this knew $1.15 fee is for and I don't think that the sportsman should have to bear this burden.

Wow! That's not even related to the sport. They should have come up with some other way to get those funds from somewhere else.[Sad]

I would be steaming mad if they pulled a stunt like that here in Cali[mad][mad][mad][mad]

Processing fees and socials are common in my experience. When I went to Delaware on vacation in August, my 7 day non-resident freshwater cost $5.20, but I needed to pay a $1.50 agent fee. Delaware requires the social security number as well. I was told that any state that can revoke a sporting license for non-payment is required to collect it.

In my home state of Connecticut, it is a different manner. However I noticed something interesting last year. When I bought my license from the Berlin Town Clerk's office, my receipt was itemized into $19 license fee and $1 processing fee. When I bought my hunting in my home town (i should have boguht a combo), I only paid the full price, and there was no multiple items on the receipt. CT only asks for a social security number on deer and turkey permit applications (that I know of).

[Wink][font "Poor Richard"][green][size 4]It is a good thing that you don't have to smoke in Calif. Everytime they need money for a project they put it before the voters who say yes let the smokers pay the bill. Have you checked your phone bill lately? If you call the phone company they are hard pressed to explain why there are about 15 different taxes on your phone bill. I canx my long distant carrier [use cell only for LD calls] but still pay a out of state LD tax. Go figure. Wouldn't complain about the $1.15 or whatever for it might bring it to someones attention that they need to raise the tax higher![/size][/green][/font]

I'm not complaining about the fee itself what I don't like is where they are collecting it. I might have paid this fee a hundred other places and not known it. Why don't they take the money out of the $700 I have to pay in property taxes on my boat this year. Which is almost double what I pay on my house!
[cool][font "Poor Richard"][green][size 4]Hi there fyshrmn - I wasn't criticizing you, was just having a little fun complaining about taxes too. We had a battle here in CA regarding where our fishing license fees were going. It seems that once the politicans get their hands on some money they get greedy and want more. Wouldn't surprise me if they decide to place a tax on float tubes claiming that it is a powered craft. Many places now charge a launching fee on float tubes. Whats next?[/size][/green][/font]

One of the federal excise taxes is a luxury tax imposed in the 1890's to pay for the Spanish american War, and was never removed, as was originally intended.

I don't smoke, but I'll tell yuo that Connecticut pulls the same tax game with cigs.
