Gave Hyrum a couple of hours this AM. Caught about 15. Ice was a good 7 inches and stable. I used a trout magnet in glow tipped with pink spikes about 12" below a castmaster. Fish were suspended at about 10 feet. They only took it right after some agressive jigging. Size ranged from 10-20". About 8 were 10-12 inch planter, then 4 in the 14-16" range and 2 that hit 20". I had another solid one on that broke me off before I thought to adjust the drag. It was quite fun. Hope it holds our for a few more weeks!!!

Awesome report Gary! Let me know when you plan to head out there again. I'm glad the fish there in Hyrum like you- cause they sure don't like me! lol

[black]Sounds like a good trip! We hit Hyrum today about noon and did the same on the planter bows. Genz worms with mealies and waxies. We did hook up on a couple bonus fish through. A couple nice greenfish. Here a picture of one of them. This bass was a solid 18". The second was just a bit smaller. My camera decided it was to cold to work on the second fish.[/black]

At the risk of being mocked and called stupid, I'm going to ask what a pink spike is? I know that they sell them with meal worms and wax worms, but what are they?

Jethro12 and BLM thanks for the reports on Hyrum it sounds like you had some great fun today.
WaveWolf a spike is a type of maggot! I'm not sure if it is the type that causes them to be pink or if they are dyed that color.

We had a good time today on Hyrum. For the second large mouth that i have ever caught, I cant complain! [] This was the second time i have fished Hyrum, and it was pretty good in my opinion. The greenie fought like a freight train.[/red]

Nice Bass! I've never been able to get into them there, hopefully someday! Did you take the snowmachine up in to the Southeast end? I fished right in front of the spillway.
Spikes are smaller than waxworms and I've heard a lot of people say they are actually maggots, but I'm no expert so who knows. As far as them being pink, my guess is that they are dyed somehow. I have picked them up at Smith's Marketplace in Logan and also at the gas station right out by Hyrum reservior.

[black]Jethro12, yes, we took the sleds up to the inlet and fished 13 ft of water against rocky point.[/black]

Hey now, there has not been nearly enough controversy here lately... In all seriousness it is an awesome fish!

I did a search on spikes and here's what I found out: Common names; spikes, maggots and Blue Bottle Fly Larvae. Colors; white (natural), red, blue and yellow. Here is the website I got the info from http://www.gollonbait.com/spikes.html [angelic] [black]Disclaimer: this is not an endorsement of this website! Thanks KJFN,....After you told me they were a blue bottle fly, I looked that up. They are a maggot or larva of a common blowfly. The blowfies have either a blue sheen, or a green sheen, thus they are called blue bottle or green bottle. Blowflies are those that hang around dead stuff with the buzzards......I guess that every creature has it's place in the universe, but sometimes a little knowledge is more than you bargain for.
