I own and have used several models of Eskimo augers. I haven't been real excited about them. I understand that cold temperatures and high altidues affect two-stroke eingines, but is there a brand that is better than the others? What do you use and what, if any, problems have you had? And can anybody tell me why so much is make out of plastic!
While at Fish Lake this last weekend both power augers, each under a year old, that we had, went bad; luckily they were the same model and we were able to make one good one for a time. I hate to spend so much money on something that is unreliable. Some body has to have some useful hints for the rest of us.
Thanks,

I think that fishcrazy has the answer. The older augers were make better than the ones made today. Out of the box, I had to take my Eskamo's carb apart and shim the choke to make it work. Quality control takes a back seat to mass production. Bottom line is more important than dependability. You just can't depend on plastic to hold a starter togather in cold weather, yet that is what the pull rope starter is held together by.
Strikemaster and Eskamo both use the same motor on several modles so I don't think that one will be better or worse than the other. [Ford or Chevy?]
At least I have my old back-up hand auger. It hasn't failed me yet!

I've owned and operated strickly Strikemaster for 18 years. Last year I bought my second and retired, then sold, the 18 year older number.. Not because it was wore out, it ran like a cut cat, but simply because I wanted to upgrade to the 10" and probably wouldnt use the 8" again.... The new jobby runs as strong and as hard as the older one ever did and I assure you I drill LOTS of holes in pretty cold weather.
Whats more, my hand auger is also a Strikemaster, a folding handle 10". I'd probably trade it for a decent 6" because I'm getting to old for this Armstrong Crap! [laugh]

I've had a Strike Master for 8 years now and have had zero problems. I highly recommend them. I went with the 10inch lazer mag. When this one wears out I'll definitely by another one. Never failed. Always starts.
