So, how is the vehicle access, parking and getting down to the ice at Strawberry for a fisherman on foot? I'd like to try somewhere on the East side, possibly Soldier Creek this weekend but don't know the conditions since it has been a while since I have been up there. A lot of "snow" has happened up there lately. These old bones are in good shape, but I really don't want to kill myself just getting on and off the ice. Been there, done that already this year. also, are snowshoes needed with all the snow? Thanks, Mr. J.

MRJ I was up there on the 20th. I don't know about soldier creek side but on the strawberry side there was 18" of snow on top of at least 24" of ice. If you walked in the snowmobiles track you would be ok but if you step out of them you went to your knees. I was there with three other guys form about 7:30 am to 2:00 pm and they only caught 5 fish all day. I didn't get a bite. The road was plowed to the parking lot but there is still a lot on snow on the road. Good luck if you go and let us know how you do.
I can't give you any info on SC side. But I was on the Strawberry side on tuesday the 21st and there was 18 inches of fluffy powder on 24 inches of ice. We strapped on snowshoes and hiked cross country down a hill (the snow is about 3+ feet deep around the lake) and then onto the ice. It would have been next to impossible without snowshoes. Once on the lake its still tough walking but do-able without snowshoes. Where we went there were no snowmobile tracks to help us out. Driving and parking is good on the Strawberry side down to mud creek and the marina (crowded with limited parking on weekends). I think on the SC side you have to park on highway 40 at the turn off to the dam and parking is fairly limited. Good luck!
