Looks like state officials have cut a hole in the ice at the bottom of the Hailstone ramp. There are guys in red suits swimming in the water right now. (1:30pm 3/3) Be careful in that area, its a sizeable hole. Don't want to lose anyone in that hole tonight or tomorrow.
Anyone know what they are doing?

Hard to tell what they are doing but the kayak was interesting. that camera looks to be having some trouble staying still and focusing. Hopefully they will use the traffic cones to mark the hole when they are done.

The spot has been marked since last night. I'm pretty sure they will mark it off again for tomorrow.
The camera gets shakey at wind conditions over about 15mph. If you zoom back a bit it smooths out.

How thick is the ice at Hailstone? Looking to make one more trip this season. Any suggestions?

[cool][#0000ff]My guess is that it is a rescue team, practicing under-ice maneuvers. Those are dry suits to keep out both the water and the cold.[/#0000ff]

They cut a hole last year like that . It was froze over good last year when I walked by and marked well .

[cool][#0000ff]I'll bet you wondered if maybe TubeDude had got impatient for soft water and cut a hole for his craft out there. Hmmmm?[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]The thought had occurred to me.[/#0000ff]

Dude , I would cut your hole on the otherside at the PWC ramp . Much thinner ice to cut . Another weekend with a head cold and looks like no ice for me . I bet the ice is thinning were you been fishing at Hailstone . That area is always open water when I walk the early ice there . Maybe it is a spring or the ground keeps it warmer because it is dark colored soil . So I been reading you may have a boat now ? I think I am ready to get tinkering with mine to get it out on some soft water .

[cool][#0000ff]South facing shorelines are usually the best places to fish early in the year because they catch the heat and raise the nearshore water temps a degree or two. That means that it melts the ice faster too.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I probably won't be testing that theory this year. Open water is calling. Tomorrow will see me tubing Utah Lake. Next week Willard. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I have both a pontoon and a new (used) boat now. Bought Utwalleye's old tin flat bottom to help defray his outlay on the new Smokercraft. It should add to the mobility and will also serve to carry our tubes to spots too far away from launch sites. Been thinking about naming it the "Tube Ferry".[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]As soon as I get it checked out and "springerized" I will be chasing wipers and wallies with it.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Hope you get that pesky cold knocked soon. Time's a wastin'.[/#0000ff]
