The Columbia River is surging with smelt. This will create "pocket” opportunities for sturgeon anglers. Good fishing has recently been experienced around the mouth of the Willamette River for sturgeon using fresh smelt. As the weeks progress, it may become more challenging to catch sturgeon with all the competition for your bait that will be out there.

The Willamette River gave up its first spring chinook of the season on January 11th. It was taken at Sellwood Bridge on the herring. This is a sign of good things to come. With the forecasted mild weather spring chinook could be a good option for the few willing to try in the clearing Willamette. The Sandy recently got a shot a hatchery steelhead but nothing they get too excited about.

The Clackamas has been providing steady but slow action for hatchery fish. It's too early on the Clackamas to count on more steelhead of the wild and broodstock type. The North Coast streams have also been putting out some steelhead but it seems mostly action is spotty as some boats do real well while others struggle. More wild fish are beginning to enter the systems so watch your diver and bait technique. Sturgeon fishing has been slow in the coastal estuaries although there is not much effort for these fish.

Crabbing has been decent and could improve with low fresh water influxes. Tillamook Bay and the lower Columbia River will be best for crabbing. The Siletz River is putting out more native fish, some on the large size, and it will only get better from here. The Alsea River continues to show low catches with no signs of improvement.
