a while back, i was fishing bird island durring the spawn. a small fishing boat with a few guys pulled up to the island and got out for a walk. the each grabbed one of the boat oars and started walking slowly in ankle to knee deep water. then they started to wack thier oars on water surface making lots of noise and ruckus. i didn't know what they were doing, other than making lots of noise, till i saw what was really going on. they were targeting catfish in the shallows, wacking them with their oars, then tossing them on to shore. they must have clubbed 20 to 30 cats to death within an hour. they loaded up their boat with cat carkasses and split. i didn't feel to comfortable seeing that and have ofter wondered scince then if they were in the right or in the wrong. i'm pretty sure they exceeded their limmit, but was wondering if their wacking techinque is legal. can anyone confirm if clubbing game fish is legal? i hope to never see that again.

Certainly illegal. But I do wonder if it was maybe carp, as that kind of activity is very common at UL for carp.

[cool][#0000ff]That was probably around May of last year. The water was still low enough then and the cats do come in very shallow when they spawn, looking for holes in the rocks for their nests.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I know you have caught enough cats to recognize the difference between them and carp. It is definitely illegal to harvest any gamefish by means other than hook and line, except in waters where underwater spearfishing is allowed. You shoulda whacked them with an oar. I woulda.[/#0000ff]

Didn't mean to imply you don't know cats from carp, it was just a thought. I didn't realize cats would get in there as shallow and vulnerable as carp. This being the case I am in full agreement it was very wrong.
