I woke up this morning and was bound and determined not to let mothere nature ruin my weekend again so away I went. It was a pretty crappy drive at 5:30 am but the lake was pretty calm all day.
One walleye, one carp, and a few misses. Temp at the ramp was 43.1, 42.8 when it opened up, and 42-40.5 elsewhere. Bird Island was 42 deg. with lots of small and large fish on the north side in 10-12' ft. Missed a few on a minnow while throwing jigs, cranks, spinners, homemade lures, repeat, repeat, my arm is sore.
Lots of carp hanging out at the end of the dikes. Majority of fish were in 10-11 ft. of water with all larger fish being suspended at 2-4 ft. I could'nt figure that one out. Only large fish marked on bottom were at the island. Only two shore fisherman today, neither had any luck. All in all, found alot structure and got to rip some lips, pretty good day for the way it started.

I didn't think that was worth posting, the walleye was nothing to brag about anyway. I lifted him out of the water with my pole like a piece of moss. I'll keep at it though, if I keep on going after the big one eventually I'll get 'em. Snow or shine...

[cool][#0000ff]Hey Bro, I know you know, but the big fish are going to hit a lot better after they get through with their procreation. May and June are the months for lots of fish and lots of big fish. But, the biggest and fattest fish are usually fall fish, after they have been feeding up on white bass and young carp all summer.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]We gots to gang up on 'em down there soon. I have a bunch more new jig heads that need some serious R&D.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Here's a pic of my last walleye (being held by a friend)[/#0000ff]

I know there is better times of year but you never know when the big one is lurking around for a bite. I caught my biggest green trout in december.

[cool][#0000ff]Nice mount. Pretty fish.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I got my largest walleye (12#) around the middle of November, in AF Boat Harbor, just before it iced up one year.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][Image: gforum.cgi?do=post_attachment;postatt_id=10070;][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I have consistently caught more and bigger walleyes in the post spawn period though.[/#0000ff]

Your oompa loompa friend makes that walleye look pretty big [cool]

[cool][#0000ff]Chuckle, chuckle. That walleye was caught last winter, I think in Saskatchewan, and was a pending world record ice caught walleye. I think it was 18. 3 pounds. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The guy who caught it was a minister, so you know he told the whole truth about it. Here is another picture, with some of the data on it.[/#0000ff]

Were the carp at Lincold Beach close enough to shoot with a bow?
[signature]
I was on my boat about 20' from the shore talking to guy that was fishing and I almost ran them over. They looked pretty lethargic, there was about 40-50 carp. I started fishing the end of the dike and noticed that they were right behind my boat. I could have hit them on the head. So, yes, close enough for a bow.

That thing is the same color as Utah lake eyes, but I know I've never seen anything with that size in 20 years of fishing utah lake. Even before you posted that it was like 18lbs, it seemed way too big for sure. !2lbs, yes I've encountered....18 no way! Your last eye huh, who you're try fool![Tongue][Wink]

[font "Comic Sans MS"][#ff4040]I have to agree with you TD. I have also caught most of the bigguns during the post spawn period. For some reason during the pre spawn and spawning periods the bigger ones just don't like to bite. After their they have done their "deeds" is when they get very aggressive and chomp on alot of different jigs and baits.[/#ff4040][/font]

Can't bame a guy for trying. Statistics are for nerds, fishing holds no boundaries.

[font "Comic Sans MS"][#ff4040]Hey I'm not blaming anything on anybody. If I had it my way I would be out there too.[Wink] It's just this thing that's called.....work. Man do I hate it!!![/#ff4040][/font]

[cool][#0000ff]I'll have you know that I have caught several big walleyes from Utah Lake that were even bigger than that one.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Only problem was that when I woke up in the morning they were gone, and the pics in my digital camera had also disappeared. Who says night fishing for walleyes is better?[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I think that with the current "balance" in the food chain in Utah Lake that it will be unlikely to see any 'eyes much over about 10 pounds for awhile. Unless the white bass make a big recovery, the predators are going to have to work hard for their groceries.[/#0000ff]

That's exactly the angle I'm trying to work. With the appearent drop of white bass in UL the walleye are going to be looking for bait fish anywhere they can (my opinion). Big fish that have survived many a lure past their noses may be more willing to go after it now. I figure it's better than sitting at home even if I am fooling myself.
This weeks weather finally looks like spring, I think that's what it's called, 50's tomorrow to 62 on saturday. Let the temperature rise...

You are dead right about lack of food in there. I'm surprised those eyes made it through the winter. Who knows, maybe they're making an effective switch to carplets and crappies in their diets. Those pics that Kraziee posted of the lincoln eyes looked pretty fat and healthy which was not at all what I expected to see.

Yeah, I also don't have to go to California to catch and release a 25 lb world record lmb. Night fishing in the home state of Utah, can yield absolutely SURREAL giants right here at home.
