Does anyone know how the fishing is on the Salmon River right now? We are looking to go up this weekend and do some fishing for steelhead and wondered how everyone was doing with flies and drifting bait. We will be leaving tomorrow so if you know anything please post today. Thanks

Looks like the best fishing is from the Middle fork to the North fork. I haven't talked to anyone fishing up there lately but the local bait shop can tell you what they are hitting on. Another good source is at Whiskey Willie's Saloon. One of the part owners has a cabin on the Snake and fishes it several times a week. He is usually in during the day. He doesn't require you to buy an adult beverage to disclose information! [cool]

Chinook,
Here is a cut and paste from Salmon River report for March. Hope this wets your whistle!

Steelhead fishing is as good as it's going to get! Break out the "big" rods. Fish are moving with the warmer water temperatures. The mainstem is on the rise with some of the lower country runoff causing some colored water. This turbidity usually disappears in a couple of days and only occasionally impacts fishing. One need only to move up or downstream to find improved conditions. Black and pink terminal tackle colors seem to be working best. Some folks tip their lures with shrimp. Weekend catch rates varied from 7 hours per fish to 11 hours per fish depending on river section. This is good steelhead fishin' folks!
Wildlife viewing can be particularly exciting along the river corridor. Elk, deer, moose, bighorn sheep, eagles, chukars and maybe even wolves can be viewed
You can also try typing in "Pahsimeroi Fish Hatchery" on the search bar and it takes you to the fishing report and fish trap catches for the day and season. This is what i used to base my trip on 3 years ago, and we hit it perfect. I caught 5 in 1 1/2 days, not bad for a first time steelhead trip. Good luck, although probably too late.

If you get as far north as the clearwater give Jim Dodge a call. He can usually tell you what is going on. Jim Dodge 208-476-7515. He makes a lot of his own stuff and it usually produces for me. Good luck!
