Hey guys,
Went out yesterday to fish locally. Fished on the ¾ day PREMIER locally. We fished both Horseshoe Kelp’s Izor Reef and Huntington Flats just a little north and off of the Twin Stacks. Danny ran the boat, Andy decked, and Manny was in the Galle…….y. The angler load was again light at 20 not counting crew.

Target Species: Barracuda, Bass, and WSB
Short Report:
The count with 20 anglers was … 1 White Sea Bass, 118 Sand Bass, 123 Barracuda, 1 Sheephead, and 31 Bonito.

Yesterday, Wednesday we went out locally figuring that we would again have a good shot at just every species that have been rampaging through the South Bay area in the last few days… including a few White Sea Bass. Grade of fish varied with Barracuda to 7lbs, Sand Bass to 4lbs, Bonito going 6 to 7lbs, my big ol’ 7lb Sheephead, legal, yet averaged sized Calico Bass, and a smallish, legal WSB rounded out the catch.

Although not at all like the elegantarian plastics fishing experienced on Monday’s trip report for early morning Sculpin fishing, today was a knock-down, drag-out battle of brute force with the hoard of 6 and 7lb Barracuda that decinded upon us in voracious waves. Adding to the mix, some of the biggest Bonito I’ve seen in years locally made sporadic runs thru the Barracuda, causing anglers to have to adjust their fighting tactics to the type of fishy that was at the end of the line. Funny how cuda and bonito tend to make you practice your ‘over and under’ skills! Luckly …… most of our anglers were veterans and knew what an anglers intentions were with a call of ‘hot rail’, ‘comin’ down’ or ‘over and under’ and were willing to follow the routine! Kudos to All! Great crowd control Andy and Danny!

The second part of the trip was one of targeting mostly Sand Bass, Barracuda, and maybe a stray WSB. Our success was again partly to having live, frozen squid and some nice finbait. Alas …. WSB fishing like Tuesday (day-before-yesterday) with 3 WSB all over 35lbs was not to be had on the boat although out of 6 confirmed hookups yesterday, 4 were totally farmed, 1 was caught but short and released, and 1 that was legal abiet ….. on the small side and kept. Just good eating size …..ya right …. isn’t that what every legal fish is?! Only joking …. Good job on the fishy
.
The usual LB/SP boats were at Izors although there were almost no little PBer’s bobbing around with their fraternity already down more towards the Flats. Of course, we and some of the Izor bunch later joined up with a lot of the sporties and PBers already in the Huntington Flats’ area north of the Twin Stacks. Premier, Victory, Persuit, Enterprise, Nautilus, Freelance (I think) and many other boats were really busy with the catching part of fishing. Again …. bait, spots, and information were shared among buddies ….. to the great joy of the anglers that knew what was making the day what it was!

Figuring that barring a WSB, that the ‘shoe’ Barracuda would take the jackpot, we did the jackpot weigh-in on the way to the Flats. Wrong!

Going to the ‘Flats’ meant there would be a better chance at a mixed bag on a given stop. Better that than further up the coast for sure .... judging from the landing counts and the Premier’s last couple of days fishing experience. Note to self: Now is the time to ride a ¾ day boat as you will have a chance at the same species throughout the fishing day even fishing spots miles away! The anglers fishing today were absolutely amazing as there were so many guys using different setups. Texas, Carolina sliding egg, leadhead/squid, fly-lining, Kroc’s, jigs, and of course ... PLASTICS !! None of the hassles of a few making it miserable for others just because their fishing method conflicted with the necessary method those around them were willing to compromise and fish for everybodys sanity !

Moved around 3 or 4 times down south with decent results at every stop. But as we know ... sometimes ... just because temperatures are right, fish are metered, and set on good structure, doesn’t mean a big-time bite will develop! The last stop saw us pecking away until the bite finally fizzled down to nothing. Thus, with fishys in bulging sacks awaiting cleaning, we decided to head for the barn.

We didn’t limit out on any one species (nobody seemed like that was important anyway ... Will miracles ever cease!? I think the mix of fish made for a great experience and trip. We didn’t really know what fish was coming up next.

The jackpot was won by Oscar with his WSB. He’s one of a number of talented guys that come out and fishes with us ... although not a club member.

Everybody had all the fish they wanted from what I could see Got back to Rainbow Harbor and Pierpoint Landing about 4:00pm. It’s nice to go home without dragging your smelly sack up the ramp or having to worry about keeping your bag cool!
