I can't get my 1979 Evinrude 6 horse kicker to start. Can anyone recommend someone in the South Davis or Salt Lake County areas that still works on outboards that old. (BTW -- don't recommend danzilla -- Danny does most of my repair work but he is too tied up with his day job to look at it at this time.)

[red] Hi kent , hey are you getting any spark at all. I only ask because I have a 1968 6 hp kicker on my boat and I found a bad coil on it. They really are pretty easy to work on.[/red]

I'm not sure whether or not it is getting a spark. I do know that it makes no effort to start. I hate the thoughts of trolling with the 85 horse outboard on Saturday at Stawberry (if we have to resort to trolling to either locate or catch some fish). I had to use it on Free Fishing Day and one burns a lot of gas using it to troll. It wouldn't start the day before the wiper tourney. N.E.T.O. was finally able to get it started by turning the choke off and pulling on it for a long time. It started fine all the rest of the day and the next day at the wiper tourney. I don't have the strength to pull on it as long has Randy does.

[red] Wow, that really sounds strangely familiar. That exact thing happened to me on Friday. I mean the part about having to trool with my 85 hp Evinrude. Tends to load up after a while, and yes it does use up a little fuel.[/red]
[#ff0000] Is your kicker a 2 cylinder? I had one cylinder that wasn't firing, and I found a bad coil, so I replaced the entire ignition system, and rebuilt the carb. Cost about $65.00 for everything on E-bay and now it runs like a new motor.[/#ff0000]

Yep it is a two stroke.

[red] Kent, have you ever had the carb rebuilt? Please understand that I am no professional but I do tinker some. If you have to play with the choke a lot, you might have a fuel problem. I'm thinking maybe a stuck needle and seat, or float.[/red]

Danzilla rebuilt the carburator 1 to 2 years ago.

[red] Ok, well the only other thing that I can think of is the ignition. Points, condenser, plugs, and the coils. Timing might be off a little. What plugs do run in it?[/red]

For the past several years, I have been using the plugs that Lee of Lee's Marine recommended that I use.

I just spoke to a mechanic that lives in Layton and he will take a look at it this evening.

[red] I would be very interested in what is found to be the problem, for future reference with my 6hp Johnson.[/red]

Great news. Apparently, the adjustment for how rich the fuel mixture is was set too high. Also, I learned to leave it on choke for only one pull of the cord.

[red] I'm glad to hear that your trouble was minor. I had to learn that lesson also.[/red]
