I fished Santa Ana river lakes on Sat. with my trout partner Travis and his step father who was fishing trout for his first time. Travis and I have been fishing trout for nearly for years now and still haven't made it into the ten pound class. My biggest being 7lbs. and Travis having 6 lbs. Knowing that Santa Ana is probably our best shot wwe've been spending most of our days here. With the new Crave bait renting out Chris's pond (The smallest of the 3 lakes here) and stocking a new state record with several of the larger sizr trout for a 4 day event. Travis and I thought now or never. We were in line al night and got a good spot near the end of the net. The first half an hour was a mad house. Lots of people jocking for spots and the fis hreally wanted to bite in the dark. We got several quick small ones and then finally I hooked a big one on my worm rod, only to loose him at the net. The fish was a good 12-15 lbs. I was pretty upset but I was also excited to finally of hooked a big one and it was so early in the morning (6:30 a.m.) I really thought today was my day for the big one. I sat there untill I had to leave for work at 1:00 without another bite. We watched fish get caught but nothing two big. The guy next to use did have two nice 12 lb.ers. but that was it for the lake. I left for work with nothing but a story about the one I lost. Travis and his step father took seperate cars and decided to stay the rest of the afternoon. I wished them good luck and left. Later at work I got a call form Travis telling me to go straight to his house after work to look at a fish he caught 20 min. after I left. He said it was huge but I didn't believe him. Sure enough when I got to his house I saw the biggest trout I have ever seen on ice. It was the size of a Yellowtail or a White Seabass. Travis caught the 20 lb. 4 oz. rainbow on 4 lb. test and green power bait. It took Travis 45 min. to put him in the net going up and down the entire shore line. 20 lb. 4 oz. congrats. Travis! Im glad one of use got a big one.
