I'll be spending a week (July 22 thru July 28) vacationing on the northern california coastal areas. I am intentionally not making any set plans because I want to just explore and take in the splendor of that area. Do any of you have any particular advice on fishing and crabbing at any particular point along this area. I'll be renting a car in San Francisco and heading north along highway 1. I can spend some money for charters or guides.
Any help is appreciated.

You may want to bring a 12lb and a 20lb setup with you. Sliding weights, #12, 6, 2, and 4/0 hooks depending on what you want to fish for.
Crabbing requires a hoop net which could probably be rented on the pier when you get here.
Your basic rigs will be the dropper loop, double drop-shot, the slider and even the hang mans rig.
From the shore, you can mostly target surfperch, sting rays and small sharks. Bait can be purchased locally as well or you can bring some Gulp baits if you prefer.
If you decided to go out on the sporties/charters, then you will need some heavier gear for some of the bigger species.[cool]

Thanks for the reply.
I just picked up a new Curado baitcaster and I can chuck a 3/4 oz weight about 75 yards with it. I think it will work out fine for surf fishing. Do you know if I will need to get a fishing license for the beaches and what not? I don't plan to do any fresh water fishing at all.
What distance above the weight (for the hook) seems to work out best on the drop shot rigs for surf fishing?
This is going to be sooo much fun!!![sly]

If you plan to fish off of the beach, then you will need a fishing license. You can get 1 day, 2day or 10 day non resident licenses.
Here is a link to the price information.

Thanks for the link. There is a wealth of information on the DFG site. You Cali guys have so many different options when it comes to fishing. I could literally spend a decade just learning the ropes.
This trip is gonna be a blast!!!

I'm just glad to be able to help.
I have spent all but about 4 years of my life in CA. There is alot more to learn than what a decade can afford. Please feel free to come on down to SoCal some time. I have enjoyed entertaining several of the BFT UT members out here over the past couple of years.
I think that we discussed more about the many areas that I fished when I lived in SLC than the current fishing at hand.
No one has gone home dissappointed.[cool]
