My first trip to catch minnows was a blast. My daughter said it felt like Christmas because you didn't now what you were going to get. In this case how many would be in the trap.

I'll bet Casey had a blast.

Where was this minnow hot spot and where did you buy your traps? Thanks for the info. WH2

what are the regs for minnows when you trap a "minnow" gamefish and did you sort through them?
Where were you and what size? What'd you use for bait?

I don't know about the rest of your questions but I do know that all gamefish must be returned to the water where they are caught when they are traped in a minnow trap. So yes, you must sort through the minnows you trap. I think most of the guys put minnow traps down where they are seeing a lot of minnows but I'm not for sure about that. I don't think there is a size limit on bait fish, they just have to be dead to use them. Hopefully one of the guys that trap minnows all the time will chime in here.

I bought a minnow trap at Sportsman's this weekend for $8

Thanks for the info, sounds like a good price. Have you ever used one before? Just wondering if they need to be baited? Thanks again. WH2

[black]Of course, they need to be baited. Ever try to catch a mouse in a mouse trap without bait? Use bread or dry dog food.[/black]

I have trapped minows for years. I usually use the round traps that are can be found at any decent fishing store. You can also build ypur own. When I trap minows I usually look for areas that have good concentrations of fish. In canals this is usually near the head gates or bridges. In the lakes around the docks or other structures. Any kind of old bread will work for bait. I usually set the trap so the holes on the ends face down the shore line. A few things to think about are putting it where it doesn't get swipped or staying close enough to it so you can keep an eye on it. I have had my trap emptied before and I have had one stolen. You do need to check what you catch to make sure there are no game fish. You also must obey the law that says transporting them alive is NOT legal. After you get your minnows salt them down with salt that has no iodine in it. Let them dry. The salt will do a great job of pulling the moisture out of them so they don't turn to mush when you try to use them. I usually package mine in amounts that are about what I use on an average trip and put them in the freezer. Hope this helps. gshorthair

Thanks for the info my friend, I was just wondering if you were still around. Been out doing any fishing or to any baseball games lately?

[black]I'm here several times a day. I just don't have a lot to say, I guess. I've been doing a little fishing and have been going to a few Raptors games. Headed for the Gorge for 10 days starting this weekend.[/black]
