So I'm in this little annual fishing contest with some guys here at work. The way it works (in a nutshell) is that you are allowed 5 "outings", in which you are to catch as many different species of fish as possible. Each species is awarded a point value. Well, yours truly has one outing left and I am behind by 8 points. I need to get as many points as possible on my one remaining outing, and it needs to be AT LEAST 9, but the more the better as some of the other guys still have outings left also. Here are the species that I have not caught yet on an official outing, along with the point values:
Brown Trout= 1
Rainbow=1
Cut=1
Brook=2
Lake=7
Splake=6
Tiger Trout=6
Grayling=6
Whitefish=1
Perch=3
White Bass=4
Sunfish=3
LM Bass=3
The rules are that you must declare your outing in advance, and once you leave your house, the outing has started and once you return to your house the outing is ended. You only get the point value once for each species, in other words, if I catch 40 cutthroat, like I did at Strawberry last week, I would still have only scored 1 point...not 40!
So, If you were to try to map out a strategic lake-hopping one-day outing, to try and score as many points as possible using the above fish, where would you go?
Here is my plan so far:
1. Leave at 3:30 a.m. this Saturday and head for Huntington Reservoir and catch a Tiger Trout (6 points!)
2. Hit Cleveland and Electric lake for a Rainbow and a Cut (1 + 1 =2, add to the 6 and I have 8!)
3. On the way home, head up Provo canyon and go to Jordanelle Rock Cliff area, and catch a perch...3 points. Add that to the 8 I already have, and I'm up to 11 points!
4. Hit the Lindon Marina for a quick White Bass and I've scored 15 points!
5. Head back home to South Jordan. By now I have travelled over 200 miles and it will be 10:00 p.m. Long day!
I feel like I need to get at least 12 points to clinch the contest. And I need to do this before the white bass run is over. I'm thinking about doing it this Saturday. Yes, it will be miserable, and expensive, but that's not the point...I want to win the stupid contest.
I've already scored my Tiger Muskie, crappie, Bluegill, Wiper, Smallie, Walleye, Catfish, Striper and Carp on declared outings, so I don't need those.
If anyone has a better game plan that would save me some miles...I'm all ears.

Suggest rather than fishing Cleveland and Electric Lake that you go over the mountain (about a 30-45 minute drive) from Huntington and fish Scofield for a splake and a cutt and/or a rainbow. Hit Lindon or Provo Boat Harbor on your way through (either on your way to Huntington or your way back from Scofield) and catch a quick white bass. Hit Deer Creek instead of Jordanelle (closer) and catch a perch and maybe a LM bass. Or you may want to hit the Uintahs and catch a grayling, a whitefish, a brook, a rainbow and I heard that either splake or tiger trout (can't remember which) can be caught.

ID HEAD FOR THE AREAS THAT HOLD THE 6 POINT AND 7 POINTERS. LIKE FISH LAKE THEN BURN UP THE ROAD FOR A TIGER THEN OFF TO WHITE BASS AND LAST STOP BY A LOCAL POND AND PICK UP A RAINBOW. IF YOU GET ON THEM YOU KICK THER TAILS.

...there are splake in Schofield?...If the odds are good that I would catch a splake (without going to fish lake!) I would definitely be down for that...and just skip cleveland and electric lake. What are the odds lately of catching fish at Schofield? The last time I went I got shellacked.
I'm also not too good at catching fish in Deercreek, although I wouldn't mind stopping there to try for a small largemouth for a minute.
I'm pretty confident I could catch a perch at Jordanelle.
So many lakes, so little time and money and energy and daylight.

I fished scofield last weekend and caught several Tiger's, bows, cutt-bows and even managed 4 cutts over the weekend. good luck to ya and hope you pull off the win[

That is the first i have heard of splake in schofeild. There are tiger trout in there but I do not believe that there are splake in there.
Sounds like a fun game.

Brain cramp[crazy] -- was thinking tiger trout, and typed splake. But if tiger trout are plentiful in Scofield now skip Huntington all together and head for Scofield.

What about this one.
1. Start at Huntington and get your tiger trout. (6 pts)
2. Then go to Boulger reservoir near E lake. Planter rainbows in abundance, with lots of cutts as well, that are easy to catch quickly. (2 pts)
3. Then down to Lindon for your white bass. (4 pts.)
4. Stop at Deer creek and catch a green sunfish in the Wallsburg arm where all the shore tanglers go. They were in there thick the last time I was there and are very easy to catch along the bank or near willows with a small jig and worm. (3pts.)
5. Go to Jordanelle for your perch. (with a shot at a LMB too) (3 pts)
6. Then fish the Provo river at Rock Cliffs for a brown trout (easily) and a possible whitefish. 1 or 2 pts)
That totals 19 or 20 pts. (depending on the whitefish) Good luck, it sounds like a fun endeavor.

I think doggonefishin and the others have good plans but let me pitch in. Start at the provo above trial lake. There you can catch Tiger, brook, cutthroat, rainbow,whitefish, and even grayling. Then down to Jordanelle. Brown, Perch and possibly a LMB(as well as rainbow or whitefish if you didn't get them already). Then to Deer Creek for the sunfish. Stop at Lindon for the white bass and you scored up some serious points. I think all but the LMB should be very attainable in about 16 hours + you will have much less driving.

ok here a sure fire plan dude.. first go to Joe's valley for the splake! put a pice of chub on wait 10 min's and your done there.. or keep fishing for another 30 min's and you'll get your cutt on the same pice of chub.. run up to huntington for a tiger if you have a tube .. or even better a small boat troll troll popgear and worm for a fast tiger or from a tube use a 1/4 chartruse jig head tipped with worm or shinner minnow put it right on the bottom and slow troll around the dam.. from there hit cc pond or some call it bench's pond..for a quick planter rainbow on a spin-a-lure..
from there it's on the utah lake for your white bass.. that's a fool prof plain.. [sly] if i'm counting right that would be 17 points.. 18 if you can count the cutt at joe's valley

Mill Hollow has Tiger Trout, Brookies, Cutts and Rainbows. It's just up the street a short drive from Jordanelle where you can get some Small Mouth Bass. Then go over to the Weber for some Browns and White Fish.

i was thinking the same thing as fuzzy- try joes valley for an easy splake and cutt... also a possible tiger trout. a few weeks ago we caught tons of splake and cutts and a few tigers. you'll probably be better off doing as fuzzy suggests and heading elsewhere for your tiger... since time is the enemy. but, that would be the first lake i'd hit. of course, fish lake would be a big numbers lake too- lakers (7), splake (6), a perch (3), and a nearby lake for a tiger (6), and then head north. good luck to you, and let us know how you do!

Thanks everyone for the replies! I'll be going Saturday morning at 3:30 a.m. I'm not 100% sure yet which lakes I'll be hitting, I'll be strategizing all that stuff tomorrow (Friday). I'm going to have a contigency(sp?) plan for everything, in case I don't catch a fish here...I'll go there, etc. So every lake mentioned will be on my mapped out plan! Hopefully I don't have to hit every single one! errr, that came out wrong...I'd LIKE to hit every single one...just not all in one day...too much driving...by the way, if you see a guy driving a Cherokee pulling a small boat and he's weaving all over the road Saturday afternoon, just give him a bump or a nudge to wake him up!

Well while you are at Lindon if you have a 2 pole permit throw out a small jig with worm and bobber while casting for white bass and there is a good chance you can get your lmb and sunfish. I have caught bluegill, sunfish, crappie and largemouths in there like that inside the harbor along the north dike halfway down near the flooded brush.

Randy, inquiring minds want to hear how your day of adventure went?

Hi all,
I had to go out of town on business for a week and have had very limited internet access...
The fishing trip last weekend was a big success, thanks for all the pointers, I'll give a full detail report this weekend when I get back in town!

Finally back in town...
Thanks everyone for your replies and PM's. Here is how our adventure went last weekend:
My brother (who is also in the contest) decided he wanted to go along, but not as a declared outing, but just to see how many points he would need to beat me in the end, and for the fishing trip. My cousin also wanted to go, but couldn't get off work till Friday night around 10:00 p.m. Not wanting to waste the afternoon, my brother and I headed for Utah Lake around 6:30 to catch a quick white bass (4 points!) and then head up to Jordanelle for the evening. Well, by 7:30 neither one of us had scored a white bass yet...they just weren't biting. Not wanting to give up the 4 points we kept making the presentation smaller and smaller until I finally caught one...on a bare hook with a chunk of worm floating with a bobber...it was about 2.5 inches long! Nevertheless, I scored my 4 points so we headed up the canyon to Jordanelle...passing Deercreek along the way while it was still light outside...and arriving at the Rock Cliff boat ramp just about dark. I'll shorten it up here. It's hard fishing in the dark at that end of the lake. No moon, no nothing. Couldn't find anything on the finder. Couldn't get a perch to bite. We trolled for a while and I caught a chub...ding ding ding! *bonus species=2 points!. About that time my cousin called and asked us to pick him up...in Salt Lake. We loaded up the boat (in the dark) and headed down Parleys and picked him up. We filled up and headed to Price. We arrived at 1:00 a.m. at the motel in Price. Got up at 4:30 and headed to Joe's Valley. I'll shorten it up here: Fish from the boat ramp. We wasted 2 hours out in the middle of the lake and caught a zillion chubs. Heading back in, at the boat ramp we finally caught fish other than chubs with spinners! I didn't catch anything else but my brother and cousin caught a nice Tiger Trout, a Splake a Cutbow! I couldn't buy a fish. So we loaded up the boat and headed to Huntington. The fishing is ALWAYS good there, and it did not disapoint us. We caught about 10 Tigers (6 points! Now I'm up to 12!) then left to go to Electric Lake to continue my quest for points. At Electric Lake only one person caught a fish...but it was me! 1 more point, now up to 13! It was a nice cut. Well, getting tired now, we stopped at Benches pond. Once again, I watched my brother and cousin catch planter Rainbows while I got stuck in the moss. Now 4:00 pm and I've been fishing for 24 hours. We left and my cousin wanted to stop at Lindon boat harbor again (he was on a declared outing also...) so we stopped there and we all caught white bass again. About 26 hours fishing, and I had scored 13 points. Putting me 5 points into the lead with my brother the nearest competitor with one outing left.
Thanks again for all the tips and suggestions. Fatigue won out this trip! We didn't hit 1/2 the lakes we planned on hitting. I'll update everyone later on and tell you who won the contest, it goes till 12/31.
Thanks again!
Randy
