I live in the Bountiful area and I am need of some fiberglass repair on my boat (have about a 10" long gouge on the side where I hit the dock when the controls froze). Does anyone have any recommendations for someone who does quality work for a reasonable price in the Davis County/SLC area?

[black]Not knowing how large your damaged area is, you probably can do a pretty good repair job yourself. If it's nothing more than a gouge that has compromised the gelcoat, either marinetex or bondo will repair the damage. Apply the product, sand smooth and touch up paint.[/black]

[black]I was in a one year vocational program in high school involving a lot of fiberglass fabrication, Mold layup, and repairs. I've built a few kayaks and boats. Fibreglass is not that tough to fix; even structural repairs. Save yourself the cash for gas and go buy the supplies and spend a few hours repairing it yourself.[/black]

The damage only about 10 inches long but it is deep and goes all the way through the hull in one place. One of my biggest concerns is matching the color. I have seen many owner-made fiberglass repairs where the colors didn't match. The color is white, but white comes in many shades. Any suggestions on how to match the colors?

[black]Sorry, paint is not my expertise but as far as the fiberglass repair, that should be pretty easy. [/black]

[black]Use some fiberglass filament, or angelhair, saturate it with resin and plug your hole. You may wish to mask off the area around the repair so it doesn't drip or run down your hull. After it sets up, sand it smooth. Use marinetex to fill the rest of the gouge and any voids in the angelhair plug. Sand that smooth. Repeat as required to have the hull surface smooth and null of voids. It's ready for paint. [/black]The inside of the hull can be finished in the same manner.

Make sure you wear a dust mask because fiberglass fibers when sanded can be almost a dangerous as asbestos.

Ken,
Almost all auto parts stores have those little spray cans of touchup paint & I know there is a bunch of whites. You could probably come up with a first class match.

Kent,
There are many gelcoat repair kits on the market that come with primary color tubes that you can experiment with to get a pretty darn close match.
I will show you the kit I am using for the gelcoat and the materials for the fiberglass repair that you will need, if you want to swing by my house? We can make the recent sale transfer as well.

Sounds like a plan.

I am home by 5 pm all week.....
I am in the process of glassing in a new floor on my vintage boat and gelcoating a bunch of old snap holes.

HEY KENT. NO PROBLEM. IF YA WANA MATCH PAINT. GET A CHIP OR TAKE OFF A BODY PART THAT IS SAME COLOR. THEN GO TO SUPPERIOR AUTO BODY SUPPLY. THEY ARE IN THE PHONE BOOK. THEY CAN EVEN PUT IT IN A SPRAY CAN FOR YA.

While danzilla was fixing some additional items on my boat he looked at the damage to the fiberglass and decided that it was something that he could handle. He fixed it and it looks great
] Now, I just need to get me some matching paint and paint it. Sure happy to save most of the $425 to $700 (that was the two quotes that I got).
