[black]Catfish can be caught by many methods that work for other species as well.[/black]

[black]The old hook, line and sinker fished on the bottom is a very common technique. Or, you can use a float a bobber, split shot and hook.[/black]

Although I'm not a catfisherman, I have quite a few friends who are...they recommend one of 2 baits: a live bluegill (if it's legal in your state) or chicken livers.

Is it actually legal in some states to use gamefish as bait? I have never heard of it legally being done.

Apparently, if it is caught legally and of legal size it's legal in Indiana...where the trick is, for example, if you're using a throw net to collect bait and you get shad, you can't use them for bait even though you got them legally, if the body of water you're fishing doesn't already have the same type of shad in it.

I have fished for catfish using all kinds of bait. Chicken liver, clams, anchovies, sardines, and mackerel all work well for cut bait. Live bait can work well too. My buddy and I spent all night on the river last weekend using frozen sardines and he hooked a 12 pounder an 8 pounder several 2 to 4 pounders and a 10 pound striper. WHen I cleaned the cat fish I found they had been eating crawfish. Chicken liver is easy to come by and if you wrap it with cheese cloth it stays on the hook real well.
