Oh man was it great!!! Thanks to all those who contributed to my last post, asking for tips, we had a GREAT time! I took out one of my neighbors who I'm teaching the ropes of fishing.

Anyways, we launched from the Strawberry boat ramp, and were headed across the lake just as it was getting light. My first time out in a boat on Strawberry, so with the map I printed off online, headed for what I thought was the ladders. Started tossing tube jigs in what I later found out was south east of the ladders. We were about 25 feet offshore, casting all around the boat in various depths of 5-25 feet of water. Caught fish at all depths. I loved the tube jigs. Thanks to the tips that were given by all, I felt like I learned a ton about it. Sometimes they will slam it, but at times you have to be real keen to feel a slight variation and to know when to set the hook. Tried teaching him, but my buddy couldn't quite get the hang of the tube jigs, and after watching me land quite a few fish, he wanted to troll. Well the boat was his, so I agreed. As we trolled I stood up front and tossed my tube jig out the front of the boat, while he trolled out the back. Caught a bunch more fish as well, as we trolled over to the ladders. Once we hit the ladders it was about 8 am, and a bunch of other boats started showing up. I was catching fish on about every other cast, and instantly we had friends. Bout 4 boats showed up and dropped anchor right by us. I think they were getting mad though, cause we were landing fish right in front of them, and I only saw a few of them hooking up.

I'm not too keen of combat fishing, so we changed locations, and at my buddies request, started trolling again. I'd had my share of fish, so I decided to relax and troll with him. That's when we got into some hogs. We were trolling rapala type lures, and couldn't keep the rainbows off em'.

All in all it was a great trip! Being my first real trip to Strawberry I was impressed at what a quality fishery it is. We didn't have a fish finder or nothing, but by what we caught, I realized that lake is FULL of fish. Didn't catch anything under about 18 inches, and caught a bunch over 22. The biggest one was caught by my buddy. Really FAT guy you will see in the pics. Biggest fish my buddy has ever caught, so as you can see, he's pretty pumped. Those fish were FIGHTERS!!!

Conditions were amazing. The water was glass the entire morning.

It seemed to me that the cuthroats like the tube jigs, and the rainbows were more into the rapalas. The only rainbows we caught were all on rapalas, and didn't catch anything but cutts on the jigs. Let me know what you think...

Planning on taking my 8 month pregnant wife up again on Wednesday morning, to fish from my inflatable canoe. I'll let you know how it goes...

Thanks again to all those who volunteered info. We had a great time, and ALL our fish are still swimming...

Looks like a great trip. I really want to know how the inflatable canoe trip goes. By the way, what size/color tube jigs were you using?

I only bought two different colors at Sportsman's. White and sort of a watermelon. I did alter a few of the white ones. Using sharpies, I colored one to look like a shiner, and gave another just a darker back. They all worked great!

I will let you know how I do with the inflatable. Hopefully it's calm enough for my wife and the belly. Figured my boy is old enough ( -1 month) that he neeeds to start fishing, eh?

Where do you live Canadian? Maybe we should take my dad's boat out some time...

Oh yeah, and what sizes did you get in the tubes? 2 inch? on 1/8 or 1/4 oz. heads?

Live just off 800 N. exit in Orem. I would love to go...

Dude, I live on 840 N in Orem Near Harmons. We really should go.

only bought 2 1/2 and 3 inch tube jigs. The whites were 2 1/2 inch, and watermelon 3 inch. I personally liked the 2 1/2 inch with an 1/8oz rig the best, mostly cause of the increased ability to feel anything. The 1/4 oz were a little heavy, but I could cast them a mile, and cover more water that way.

To be honest, when everyone was around me, they were all vertically jigging. I was casting out and working back, focusing on a solid presentation,,, and was killin' em right in front of all these guys in huge fancy boats. It was great. I did try vertical jigging for a bit, just to see how it felt, but without a fish finder, I was too impatient, and my other methods were producing well...

I need a fish finder.

Anyone have any opinions on my question bout the tube jig mostly producing cuthroats, and rapalas producing rainbows question above???

Just my observation, but easily could have been a coincidence

Glad you got into them. I have also had those days at Strawberry when it seemed like the entire reservoir was full of fish, and then there have been those other days when I have been of the opinion that there are less than 10 fish in the entire place. Enjoy the great trips when you get them, because they don't happen every time. As far as your question goes, your experience is the opposite of what I have typically experienced. I have caught a hand-full of rainbows trolling any type of lure at Strawberry. Most of the rainbows I have caught at Strawberry have been on some type of bait fished on the bottom (or sometimes a jig that has little motion fished on the bottom), and mostly in shallower water.

[red] Looks like you guys really had a great time out on the Berry. Glad to see you were able to find some nice ones, I would say that you found the combination pretty quickly. Good Job.[/red]

WAY TO GO! NICE FISH! I agree the bows hit lures more often than they do jigs. HA69 has a few secret lures that he catches the bows on.

Very nice report, and nice fish too! Thanks for sharing, and I'm glad you guys had such a good time. Hopefully the fish cooperate for your wife as well.

Oh no, now you have gone and done it!!!! You will likely never fish anyplace else in your life after that kind of a day!! Great report and pics. Glad you got into them!!

Thanks for the report . Sweet fish .

Great Job!

I had a similiar experience up at the Berry a couple months ago. Compliments to MGB, and I found out there is nothing like jigging.

I'm looking forward to this Ice season to perfect some of those skillls. Beautiful fish too.
