Oh man was it great!!! Thanks to all those who contributed to my last post, asking for tips, we had a GREAT time! I took out one of my neighbors who I'm teaching the ropes of fishing.
Anyways, we launched from the Strawberry boat ramp, and were headed across the lake just as it was getting light. My first time out in a boat on Strawberry, so with the map I printed off online, headed for what I thought was the ladders. Started tossing tube jigs in what I later found out was south east of the ladders. We were about 25 feet offshore, casting all around the boat in various depths of 5-25 feet of water. Caught fish at all depths. I loved the tube jigs. Thanks to the tips that were given by all, I felt like I learned a ton about it. Sometimes they will slam it, but at times you have to be real keen to feel a slight variation and to know when to set the hook. Tried teaching him, but my buddy couldn't quite get the hang of the tube jigs, and after watching me land quite a few fish, he wanted to troll. Well the boat was his, so I agreed. As we trolled I stood up front and tossed my tube jig out the front of the boat, while he trolled out the back. Caught a bunch more fish as well, as we trolled over to the ladders. Once we hit the ladders it was about 8 am, and a bunch of other boats started showing up. I was catching fish on about every other cast, and instantly we had friends. Bout 4 boats showed up and dropped anchor right by us. I think they were getting mad though, cause we were landing fish right in front of them, and I only saw a few of them hooking up.
I'm not too keen of combat fishing, so we changed locations, and at my buddies request, started trolling again. I'd had my share of fish, so I decided to relax and troll with him. That's when we got into some hogs. We were trolling rapala type lures, and couldn't keep the rainbows off em'.
All in all it was a great trip! Being my first real trip to Strawberry I was impressed at what a quality fishery it is. We didn't have a fish finder or nothing, but by what we caught, I realized that lake is FULL of fish. Didn't catch anything under about 18 inches, and caught a bunch over 22. The biggest one was caught by my buddy. Really FAT guy you will see in the pics. Biggest fish my buddy has ever caught, so as you can see, he's pretty pumped. Those fish were FIGHTERS!!!
Conditions were amazing. The water was glass the entire morning.
It seemed to me that the cuthroats like the tube jigs, and the rainbows were more into the rapalas. The only rainbows we caught were all on rapalas, and didn't catch anything but cutts on the jigs. Let me know what you think...
Planning on taking my 8 month pregnant wife up again on Wednesday morning, to fish from my inflatable canoe. I'll let you know how it goes...
Thanks again to all those who volunteered info. We had a great time, and ALL our fish are still swimming...
