Went to Cave Lake for 4 days. We got there Friday late morning set up camp and on the water by 3pm. Right off the dock I had 2 to the boat. After a couple of hours the sun went down and so did the temp. 17 to the boat another 10 or 12 hook-up and so many taps I couldn't even begin to count. Sat-Sun pretty much the same. Most of the fish were caught on olive crystals with some on brown and halloween. Fish were about 8-10 in with a few in the 12-14. Temps were down in the morning but beatiful during the day. This was my first trip there and had a blast. Couple of my buddies tried Comins (I was scouting for my deer hunt) said it was tough fishing lots of weeds and moss. Only caught 2 but were much bigger at 16-19. I will be going up again to hunt but will be doing some fishing too.

Thanks for the report. What kind of fish were you catching? Those are really good size fish.

Best regards,

Rainbows and 2 browns. We were FFing on personal pontoons. A lot of folks catching them off shore with spinners, powerbait, and worms.

What a great trip. I've hunted that area in the past. It's a wonderful place! Your report makes me want to load up the old canoe on the truck and make tracks to Cave Lake. Nice report.

Went back up fishing is still excellent. The weather although alittle cold in the morning is very nice in the afternoon. Same thing olive crystals were still the killer fly. May return again this weekend.

No offense, but maxing out at 14 inch rainbows is not my idea of nice sized fish. I have fished cave lake, and as you stated you can catch a lot of small planters. Cave lake is not good IMHO for nice rainbows, if you are patient and lucky there are nice browns in there but they are few and far between. Comins is the place for good sized rainbows 2.5-5lb rainbows being the norm. Yes it is weedy late in the year but early it is nice. Otter Creek in UT is just a bit farther but if you want the same type of action as Cave lake with decent size (2lb avg) it is so much nicer. Cave lake is beautiful, but for great fishing i would not reccomend it. just my humble opinion. I have heard that they are going to lay off the heavy stocking and try and get some bigger fish iin there though.

I agree with you about the size of fish at Cave, but the fishing is good and the little guys are still alot of fun to catch and the setting is quite nice. Cumins was way to weedy and not near as fun to fish. I guess it is each to his own quality vs quanity. When in comes to catching trout in southern NV you pretty much have to play with planters. Minersville UT is a little closer and fish in the same range as Otter. I haven't ventured up to Otter but i will have to go try it. I am more of a Kolob guy when it comes to UT.
