[black]Evil Ash, G$ and I went up to Strawberry this morning in our kick boats. Got in the water by about 8:30a.m. There was still a little fog on the water at Ladders and the water was glass smooth.[/black]
[black]Chilly, but again no wind so quite pleasant.[/black]
[black]Ran into ScottyP, Kevin and Majja (what a great bunch of guys). And tube dude, you would be impressed with Majja tube pimping[/black]
[black]I had to show off the net that Gregory Walker made for me so here is a few of the fish I landed:[/black]

[black]The fish of the day however goes to EVIL ASH. 27" FAT cutt. The bad thing was the batteries in his camera went dead, but he had plenty of wittnesses[cool][/black]

No comment But glad someone had fun.

Nice report and great pics, FG. Thanks for sharing.
Love the net. Especially the large size. Do you know what the hoop size is? Looks like it would be adequate for some large fish.

[cool][#0000ff]I'll echo it...nice report and pics. I love the net too.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I guess we will just have to wait for Majja to post the pics on his new ride. Glad he got it dialed in.[/#0000ff]

[black]Nice net with 19" by 12" opening. The only down side is it DOES make those otherwise nice fish look kinda small[laugh][/black]
[black]Here is the same size net I use at the Lodge(but mine is prettier)[/black]

Nice mixed bag. I'm pretty sure I saw pike, rainbow and brown. On re-examination it looks like the pike is actually a pickerel. And yes that is a very nice net.

[#00bf00]There are no pike or pumpernickle, I mean pickerel[cool] in Strawberry. I've seen pictures of them things and they scare the bajeeebiee out of me. If I have to put a metal tippet on my fly line, I am wearing Kevlar gloves[

[cool][#0000ff]Our Canadian member fishes where those toothy critters are common and is not familiar with Strawberry cutts and bows.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]My guess is that the shadows cast by your net on the side of the fish makes them look like pickerel.[/#0000ff]

Yeah, I had to go back and look again, too. But now that I've done that I can see why Don would think that first one is a pickerel. The way it is laid out and the net shadow give it that appearance.
Guess it depends on what you're used to seeing. I was thinking trout so that's what I saw.

I guess I wouldn't know a Pickerel is it bit me in the B. I have never seen one. Pike I am sure are real close to a Musky but I have never seen a pike either.

Yep,
The Dude and the Zonk are right it's the amazing powers of your new net casting shadows on the backs of trout and turning them into fang filled predatory pickerel. No kidding the shadow of the mesh casts markings that look exactly like the markings on an Eastern Chain Pickerel. Trust me I know thereof which I speak.
Here in Ontario we have no pickerel despite the fact that most locals call walleyes by that misnomer. In my excursions to Rhode Island I have caught a few real pickerel and they are much like our Northern Pike but have distinctly different markings. They also don't get to weigh upwards of 30/40 pounds like the Northerns in our "Great White North."
Yikes imagine a fish 3 or 4 times bigger than that marvellous trout you caught and with a mouth full of nasty teeth to boot.

Yea i will get pics of the new ride up as soon as i get back from NY. Which will be some time tomorrow.

[#0000ff]Hey Goddess Lady, you should plan a trip to Yuba this spring for some fly flinging for northerns. Good opportunity and plenty of 'em in there these days. They eat flies good.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Here's a couple of pics to show the markings of the pike and pickerel. Both pretty fish and both worthy of chasing with tackle.[/#0000ff]

[#0000bf]Don't get down south too often. Always head North.[/#0000bf]
[#0000bf]I will be in Vegas for Thanksgiving, maybe I will like it so much that I will get back down there this spring.[/#0000bf]

[cool][#0000ff]If there is any way for you to add Yuba to your social calendar, think May or early June. The water will be up, the fish will all have spawned and will be hungry. At that time of year there is also some good open water fishing for the rainbows, near the top, so if the pike don't wanna play you can at least stretch your string and bend your stick on some silly troutskis.[/#0000ff]

[black]The calendar right now is the Sportsmen's show in March hopefully (I will be there with Lightning Products - the nets, fly rods and boxes) still trying to get that one set up, then in April the Fly Tying Expo, but May could be good and HEY! we got a new trailer. Maybe we can plan a trip down there with you and the woman and you can show me what's, what. [/black]
[black]I would love to go fishing with you TD and I am very humble, just want to have a good time. Fish or no fish, it's all good![/black]

[cool][#0000ff]Could be fun to do a "gathering" upon the waters of Yuba. Let's see how our schedules develop and what the weather gods have in store for us. Then, as we get closer we can plan the details and make it happen.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Not sure how much I could learn ya, but it would be great to share some lake with ya. If anything I would be a student of your inestimable fly-flingin' talents.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I have a 7-8 weight outfit that I plan to exercise a lot next year...wipers, cats, walleyes and maybe pike. I have fallen from grace (fly fishing) over the past years and I need to redeem myself.[/#0000ff]
[signature]
I too have a cherry 10' 8wt with a 3" fighting butt, that I have yet to put to the pull. I am stubborn however, and love my 6wt.s
Glass is even funner, cause the fish set the hook them self with the limber rod.
And by the way, I am in no way in your league on the waters you fish, but willing to give it a go.
[signature]
[cool][#0000ff]I have had my 7-8 rod for several years and used it for Arizona warmwater fishies as well as Sea of Cortez toothy critters. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]At the first of this year I bought a 9.5 foot 5 weight (they were out of 10') on a closeout and built a rod with a 4" fighting butt extension...mostly to be able to carry it in a rod tube on my tube. I planned to carry it on several waters this summer, but alas, it is still virginal. I need to correct that also. I got a nice little Okuma reel for it, but haven't even properly lined it yet.[/#0000ff]
PS. I have an 8.5 foot boron rod, 6 weight, that I made over 20 years ago. Ever fish with one of those? Super light but a tad stiff. Great feel for nymphing though.
