Before buying my boat shore fishing was all I could do. Since buying my boat I did not shore fish at all. A couple years ago a friend of mine talked me into going fishing from shore again and now (this time of year) that is about all I do, problem is where I live (near Flaming Gorge) it is windy most times. The draw back for shore fishing for me was the mess. Hands and pants all dirty with worm mud, and mud all over the poles and reels, I've also learned to take care of this too.

This is how I detect a strike in even the hardest of winds. Cast out the bait and let it hit bottom, reel in a bit of the slack. Then hang a bobber rigged with a swivel and weight, (or in really strong wind) an old golf ball rigged with a small cup hook between the last two eyes of your rod. When a fish hits the ball will bounce or drop. Remove the ball or bobber from the line before setting the hook, sometimes it can get wrapped around your rod and you could loose a nice fish.

I like fishing for Rainbow Trout this time of year and this is my bait of choice.

A bucket of water helps keep the hands clean, and the fillet board is a nice place to set things while rigging.

Made some nice PVC rod holders (thanks Roy D.) keeps the rods out of the mud and keeps the fish from dragging them out into the lake.

nice bows, and great tips! thanks for sharing that! when i was growing up, my grandparents taught me the art of shore fishing for trout. they would sit all day, sometimes in very cold weather, and catch fish after fish. most of the time they would out-produce the people in boats... myself included! it takes a lot of patience, but using the tips you've given it can be very good. thanks again!

[black]You basically just described my set-up from the terminal tackle to the PVC rod holders. I have used almost that exact set-up for years and years and while doing it, I have caught a good number of fish and a variety of species. [/black]

[black]It is the perfect fishing technique to use when a person has a great deal of time to sit on the bank or shore of any body of water. [/black]

Sweet tips! Texas is ALWAYS windy. My set up for shore fishing is very similar to yours. I like the water bucket-much faster than my baby wipes!

I like fishing from the bank when it's windy because the bait fish get pushed into the shore and the bass usually follow! I remember throwing my cast net out on a really windy day and pulling in 3 crappie, 6 blue gill, a handfull of shad and a small bass with a shad in his mouth!
