If you gobble too much turkey on Thanksgiving - or even if you eat no turkey at all - the trails of Spring Mill State Park near Mitchell are always a great place for a hike, especially Nov. 24-25, when there's something special to do afterward.
On both days, Pioneer Village will feature artsy staff members, who will assist park visitors in making crafts for the holiday season. Of course, you're welcome to stop for the crafts even if you're not up for the trails.
Village visitors will be able to purchase craft bags for $10 each at the park's Gristmill from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. As you visit each of village's seven buildings, a staff member will be available to help you make a craft, perhaps to give to someone as a Christmas gift. After all, what makes a better present than something you have made with your own hands?
If you've got the time, both days are worthwhile. Different holiday crafts will be offered each day. You may wish to purchase both a Friday and a Saturday craft bag. Sample of the crafts will be available for viewing at the Gristmill.
The weekend fun will continue Nov. 26, when the village staff will decorate and prepare for "Holiday in the Village," set for Dec. 1-2, 1 to 9 p.m. in Pioneer Village.
A gate fee of $5 per in-state license vehicle or $7 per out-of-state license vehicle will be charged at the park entrance each day. For more information please contact Spring Mill State Park, (812) 849-4129, Dwilliams@dnr.in.gov.
