[green]2006 is almost gone, so think back at 2006 and tell us what is the COOLEST, MOST INVALUABLE, OR WORST PIECE OF CRAP you bought for your addiction known as Fly Fishing.[cool][/green]

Sorry to say my worst purchase was a guided trip down the Green River B section. I cought one 15" Rainbow and that was it!
My guide wouldn't let me use my choice of flies and we were forced to fish on only the left side of the river, because another Guide from the same place was fishing ahead of us and was fishing the right side.
I wanted to use a dry with a wet droper and he would not let me.
Hind sight,I should have been less nice and demanded to fish the way I wanted but I didn't want to "rock the boat".
It was my first guided trip and may be my last.

Hey there DSK - I often wondered about hiring a guide in an area that I am not familiar. But have heard so many horror stories such as your own. If I am paying their salary + tip I should be able to use a tootsie roll or a piece of gum if that is what I want to use. What makes these cats think that they work for the SSS? Perhaps flygoddess has some insight into this subject that we are not seeing. Oh will think about your above question FGD.[/green]

[green][cool]Well I can't say that it is the coolest, however I did purchase an Orvis 8½' 3wt Frequent Flyer rod this year. Not that I am inclined to travel by air to go fishing but more so that it fits nicely in my trunk of my car. Now like a boy scout I am always prepared. I guess compared to my other rods it cool.[/green]

..this is kind of easy....:-).. I bought my first set of flies (top water poppers) soon after I returned from St Louis this past May.... from that I have been out fishing or at least trying to fish with my flyrod and have since learned a lot about the sport including building up my fly collections so to speak... an added bonus.. and this will sound real sappy...lol..
.... thru going onto fly fishing bulletin boards I got to meet some awfully nice people such as ya'll....

[black]First off, as a guide, I welcome anyone that knows what they are doing (as you do DKS) with open arms. The thing about fishing down one side of the river, I would guess because the boat in front of you would probably scare the fish away.[/black]
[black]Myself, I would offer flies that I know work, but if you wanted to try your own, fantastic! The idea is to make the client happy and if you used your own and they worked, I would say you would be a happy camper. The only thing left for the guide is to try to put you onto the fish and any other assistance (knots in line, reties, landing, etc.) and lottsa pictures[cool].[/black]
[black]Basically I try to become a friend to the client, that way they are more relaxed, specially if something stupid happens, you can both laugh about it....like friends.[/black]
[black]But, that is just me, my mom always told me I wear my feelings on my sleeve (which means I always worry about other people)[unsure][/black]

As I read over my post, I see that I needed to add more to it but I hate to make long posts.
The guy in the front of our boat was a fly fishing newbie.
He needed a lot of help and attention. His trip was great.
My guide was new to the business [less than 6 mo.]and the guide in front of us was with him. The Green gets a lot of boat pressure so deviding the river into 2 sides was done to split the fishing and not let the first boat get all the good water. Two of by friends were in the first boat and they had a great trip.
As I said before, I should have spoken up on the river, so it is my fault that my trip wasn't as good as I had hoped it would be.
I have floated the Green on tubes and toons many times but this was my frist trip in a guide boat.
Now the best thing about fishing in 2006 was getting my new St. Croix Ultra Ledgend Fly Rod that my kids gave to me for Father's Day. I used it at the Green for a whole week trip and had a blast except for the boat ride.

[cool][green]Well said flygoddess- exactly the attitude that I would expect from a guide.[/green]

The worst and the best is the same thing: I got started in fly fishing. It's been fun, it's been frustrating. Some days I didn't know if I should just chuck the rod into the river or sell it on E-bay for 10 bucks. By 9:00 that night I was usually thinking, "If I tied a #12 black wooly bugger with a strip of flash down the side, and went to that river to that hole where that fish followed the other fly...." Some days the peace and serenity of water swirling around my knees was great therapy.

[#ff4040][cool]I learned how to flyfish! Not really good yet, but hopefully I will get better.[/#ff4040]

I talked 2 people into trying it and now they love it.

[#ff4040]I love it too! I have always wanted to try it. At first it's hard and frustrating, but once you get it all figured out it's a blast.[/#ff4040]

Sometimes it is still hard and frustrating for me! Sometimes everything goes to he*# and i get mad and leave, but other times everything comes together and i catch 20+ fish. That is what it is all about. There is always something to learn. I learn something everytime i go.

[black]I agree that it is a sport that is never truly mastered, but sure is fun to practice[laugh]. I bet even the pro's have their moments (a good example although not a fly fisherman is Bill Dance, that guy cracks me up cause he is just like us)[/black]
[black]Every one develops a style that works for them and that is what it is all about.[/black]
[black]DKS, I am going to fish the Green this year, I got the band booked back up there in Vernal for the end of April. Maybe you can help me out on that when it gets a little closer.[/black]

[#ff4040]Bill Dance just like us? HAHAHAHAHAHA that's funny. He's alot more clumsy than the average joe for sure![cool][/#ff4040]

Yeah, sounds like golf doesn't.

Worst thing - I had the time to do a lot more fishing than what I did but I felt that I should be doing other things but I did not actually get these things done. Also I did not learn to fish lakes or fish for carp. Lots of opportunities for both around here.
Best thing - I found part of a high mountain stream that does not get fished much but has a higher density of fish and bigger fish than other parts of the stream....... and it is a reasonable drive from the house.
