Drove past Newton tonight 85% iced over only open water is out from the cement pad then to the north about 100 yards or so. I drove down the ramp and the ice is about 1.5' thick so if the weather stays cold for the rest of the week it should be fishable by the weekend down by the dam and up on the north end!!M.H.

Thanks for the report. I haven't fished Newton for quite sometime. Anybody fished it recently? In the last 6 months or so?

Talked to the DNR guy's that check us yesterday. They gave me a number to call to see if there is fish yet. Me and BLM fished it last year and mark'd zero and caught nothing.
I've heard there are fish back this year. I will call the biologist and report what he says.

Scott (BLFG),
If you know the guy, can you call him and get the real scoop? If whatever fish are left can't stand the pressure, then we will leave them alone.
I can wait a few years.

IFG
IFG, I know that the largies survived the low water the past few years! I watched a guy catch several from the rocks on the dam around June in the 15-18" range I have not herd any info on the perch ,blues and crappie?? The water level is so high this year we might have a hard time locating anything at all?? M.H.

[red]I took my son over there once this summer and we caught about 20 large mouth and 4 perch in about an hour and a half maybe two hours from the east bank. The bass were 6-10 inches and the perch 4-5 inches. There was very little coloration in any of them - mostly gray with darker gray bands. We took a limit home for the frying pan and found nothing but mud/clay in their bellies when we cleaned them. I was using a 2" silver sparkle curly tail and my son was drowning night crawlers. We were getting multiple hits on just about every cast. They even ate the tail off my curly tail but it didn't seem to matter much. I was still getting tons of hits as long as I bumped the "grub" slowly over the bottom. I probably could have connected more except I was using a pretty big hook and I was too lazy to take a minute to scale down. We were having plenty of fun as it was anyhow. From all that it looked to me as if they had not only repopulated but over populated with a whole pond full of hungry little buggers. Next year may be promising in getting back to its pre drought glory days. [/red]

[#ff0000][#4040ff]I don't know for sure but I would guess that the mud clay substance was Zooplantion. There may be a shortage of critters for them to eat. Hopefully with a few goods spawns there will be an established food chain. I have noticed this in ponds that have suffered years of drought and unsuccessful spawns. Just a thought[/#4040ff].[/#ff0000]
