Went up to Porcupine this morning with DeYoungFisherman, just to see how things looked and possibly fish. We kind of figured we'd wind up going back to Mantua. But there was 3 inches of perfectly clear ice at the dam. And since we couldn't break it, we got on it and fished for the morning.
There's still some open water in the middle, 400 - 500 yards out from the dam.
We were busy all morning. Wish we could say we got into some kokes but that never happened. However the small rainbows in the 8" range, and browns from 11 to 12" were all over the bottom 1/4 of the water column. We both lost bigger fish. The Aqua-Vu showed great numbers at times. And the majority were small. Could be a great kid spot this year, if you're looking for quantity. The fish moved deeper as the sun climbed higher, but the fastest action was in the 25 - 30 foot depths.
DYF outfished me big time, but we had a blast being the first ones (it appeared) to hit the pond.

Thanks for the report on Porcupine. I wished I knew where the biggers bows were, the last few years all I have caught are the dinks nothing bigger that about 12". Too bad you didn't find any Kokes. How were the roads? Did you drive right to the dam?

Oh yeah, all the way to the dam. There wasn't 2 inches of snow on the ground as of Saturday morning. And the road was just packed down; traction was good.

Thanks for posting your report UintaIce. I've been waiting to hear this first ice report since my last trip up there in my boat in November. I hope the rest of the lake freezes soon. Did you try fishing in any water deeper that 30 feet? WH2

I caught this twenty inch bow last month but it was the only bow we caught, lots of browns. WH2

We did. We punched 8 or 10 holes each at various depths. The deeper we ranged the fewer fish we saw once we past 40 feet. Active fish were 25 - 35 feet for the most part, moving some as the sun climbed higher.
[blush] Merry Christmas!

Thanks for the photo and info. I guess the thing that surprises me is that they put thousands of rainbows in porcupine each year and yet it is rare to catch a bow over about 14". I know it is not over fished so I would think that there are some big bows in there as well as some big browns. I have seen lots of big browns while fishing. The biggest brown I've caught out of there was 15 lbs. but the biggest bow was about 2 lbs.

Thanks again for the report. I don't know that I will get there anytime soon but is one of my favorite places to fish.

That bow in the picture was four pounds, a nice fat fish and it's still in the lake. We also saw a nice hook jawed male crusing the shore line, chasing minnows, when we arrived. We could clearly see the it was a rainbow by its bright colored red side. I wonder if some of those bigger browns munch those smaller bows when they are planted, that would account for their fewer numbers. I've been hoping to catch a big brown, like that 15 pounder you caught, for years. Were you bait fishing, trolling or casting when you caught it?
