I am a big fan of the banjo bobber.

you cant tell when the fish are swiming up to your bait, you can however see when the fish are just lipping the jig much the same as with the vexilar.

my buddy got him self one for christmas this year, he bummin, a 250 dollar tool and no ice...

I am thinking I might pull my boat back out this week and give up on ice season all together.... the next 7 days are perdicted to be in the mid 40's.

this weather is getting to sound like a broken record. all I can give are no icefishing reports...

[black]What's a Banjo Bobber ?[/black]

you can buy them, but honestly you can make them cheeper and of higher quality and better sencitivity.

I tip or lift my rod about half inch and if the bobber bends then there is a fish lipping my jig. just set the hook and bring er in... I fish right along side guys with vexilars and I pull them in just as fast.

the whole trick is behind the vexilar and the banjo bobber is being able to tell when the fish is on your jig.

since I made my original post about the banjo bobber, I said you would need to make a bunch of them, I have changed my mind, the last one I made has been on my rod now for 3 years.

I mounted it with liquid electrical tape. any auto supply will cary it. makes a nice perminent mount and wont come off till I take it off.

here is a copy of my Ice fishing tip of the day.

Well its time to break out the old banjo, guitar or fittle or any spring steal instrament and time to start putting away all your ice fishing gear.

But it is also time to start thinking ice on for next season. All them clever ideas you had while on the ice, now is the time to build them while the memory is still fresh in mind.

I came across a man here last week who saved all his broken guitar strings. Like most of us anglers we seldom throw any thing away, he showed us his bobber on his rod, he was getting strikes and showing them when the rest of us were still looking for a strike.

Well the truth of the matter is as the well-seasoned pan fisherman will attest, at times they can strike so light that they don’t show the slightest of hits. and some times they will hit and actually rise on the bite leaving the anglers clueless.

I offered to buy one from him, but he handed me one to use as a pattern.

Here is what the end product looks like.

He takes the lightest steel string and clips them to length and uses a #18 or #20 gage electrical wire casing to slide over after folding and placing a loop in the fold.
he then would tape it to the end of his rod.

like I mentioned earlier, I use liquid electirc tape, so I do have to hold it in place for a few minutes to allow the tape to hold but I get a perminant mount. the attachment below show it mounted to my rod tip. Like I said you can buy one, or you can make a better one with higher sencitivity and quality. the longer you make them the greater sencitivity you will acheive. personaly the lenth I have tells me when a one inch gill is lipping my jig.

[black]Cool ![/black]
[black][/black]
[black]I have some of the store bought ones and I don't like them. They are not very sensitive and the seem to interfere with hooksets. [/black]
[black][/black]
[black]I also just happen to have some old guitar strings (and banjo strings) - the high "E" from my old set of light guage guitar strings seems like about the size I want to try out. Thanx ![/black]
