two of my brothers and i went to currant creek today. we took the snowmobile and went around the lake. we fished out from the fishermans parking with the big dirt mound in it. there were quite a few people, but everyone was well spread out. ice in our area was around 8 inches thick. it got pretty warm today and we ended up fishing in a big puddle. (but the ice remained pretty solid)

fishing was good as usual. we caught all the cutts we wanted to catch. we even managed to get a few pretty nice ones today. lots of small ones though.

the top fish was 19 inches and weighed in at 3 pounds 8 ounces. i dont know that ive ever caught a 19 inch cutt with that kind of girth!

we caught some other fatties around 16 inches, and plenty of pencil shaped cutts. best bait early was genz glow jigs tipped with meal worms. around noon they started snubbing us, so we switched to white paddlebugs tipped with chunks of chub. this resulted in some very hot fishing as the cutts got very aggressive again!

we left at about 1:00, not because fishing had slowed any, but because we were ready to go. it was a pretty dang good day on the ice!

I cant believe that we posted a report on the same like with the exact same title one minute apart from each other.. your post wasnt there when I posted or I would have just added to yours... good job on the fishing.. we didnt have as much luck.. (see almost duplicate post)... do you think it was where you were fishing?? I almost took the four wheeler so I could get away from the crowd but decided against it.. now I wish I would have..

yeah, i thought that was pretty funny too! im sure location had a lot to do with the difference in our days. ive done good near the dam too, though... in the past. i guess you never know. we drilled one set of holes in 24 feet of water and fished them all day. the cutts just kept consistently moving through. im sure next time will be a different story for you!

good luck, bkidder

You know you should just say you caught that cutt at the Berry because they wont believe you caught that up there . Nice fish . It has been a while but I have caught a few nice ones there before .

were you guys in the gray dodge with the sled in the back, kind of tipped up?
[signature]
no, we had a 4 door chevy pulling a small trailor. (converted boat trailor with plywood deck) there were three of us. two on the machine, and one on the sled.

I think I saw you guys... we were in the silver nissan titan.. do you think next time you could give me gps coordinates so I, I mean my wife could catch more fish [Wink].. I dont know a whole lot about ice fishing but sometime someone is going to need advise about flyfishing and I will be able to help [cool]

didnt take a gps today. we really werent in a secret spot. just 20 yards out of the fishermans parking lot that has the big dirt pile in it. pretty easy to find, but a long hike if you dont have machines. that isnt a magic spot though. just go early next time and fish in less than 30 feet. try to set up near a point on the lake. the further from crowds is probably the better. take a variety of baits to try. try deadsticking, active jigging, fishing near bottom, fishing suspended, and fishing 5-10 feet under the ice. fish will usually move all over the water column there. let me know if you have any more questions.

good luck, bkidder

How is the road up there. I have never been up to the lake but have heard you need a snow machine.

We stopped on our way home from Pelican and walked out a way from the dam. We only fished for a couple of hours but we caught 4 and missed a lot of bites. We were using chartruese paddle bugs tipped with meal worms. We had all of out action up off the bottom. I don't have sonar but I would guess we were 15 or 20 off the bottom. Some guys were leaving when we arrived at 2:00 and they had limited out.

I was wondering about the road up there as well. Which way is everyone going in? I know you can get there a couple different ways and need to know which one is the best in snow.

we went up the only way i know how. we went past strawberry and took the road that follows the currant creek river. this took us to the dam. there was snow on it, but not a ton. it gets deeper as you get close to the dam. it was very well traveled when we went up and we had no problems at all. we parked at the dam and drove the machine around the lake. a lot of people just walk down the dam to the lake. others walk accross the dam and then down to the lake. i maintain that 30 feet or less of water is best, and to fish the whole water column. im going to go up again in the morning, so i'll give an updated report when i return.

I am thinking of taking a four wheeler. How accessible is the lake for four wheelers? If I park by the dam can I make it across the lake with the wheeler?

The road up from highway 40 was snowpacked but not too bad. I would still advise using 4 wheel drive. Four wheelers and snow mobiles were driving on the lake while we were there. One thing I forgot to mention is that there was 4 or 5 inches of slush and water in the area by the dam where we fished. Water proof boots are a must.

im not sure about wheeler access from the dam. when i have fished that area in the past i have just walked accross the dam and then down it. i imagine a good wheeler could make its own road over there somewhere, but im not sure whats legal and whats not in that area.(especially considering the fact that most machines are going anywhere they want up there... probably a winter thing) if not, then perhaps you can get your wheeler around the lake on the main road... where i take my snowmobile. there are plenty of wheeler tracks on that road right now.

on the lake today there was only a skiff of snow. the slush has frozen into about 2 inches of ice, and then an inch or two of slush, and then the regular 7 inches or so of solid clear ice. today stayed cold enough that not a lot of slush came back.

fishing was slightly slower today than in was on the first, but we still caught tons! todays biggest fish were only 16 inches, but they were fat and well fed. we also, of course, caught tons of smaller skinny cutts.

best jig colors were white early and chartreuse in the afternoon. tipping with mealies and chub chunks both worked well. fish were caught in 20-25 feet of water and throughout the column.

great place to introduce new fisherman to the sport! it will be interesting to see what this supposed storm is going to do to the road. (usually takes a few days after a storm to get it plowed to the dam)
