There were another 20 rainbow trout over 10 pounds caught at Santa Ana River Lakes over the past week, including a 19.3-pounder landed by Louis Garcia of Compton with Crave Bait.
The rains late last week muddied up all three lakes and the fishing has been tough overall, but the water was starting to clear by mid-week and the action is getting hot. A surprising number of fish were caught during the rains, and there was a decent catfish bite for the few anglers fishing the cats.

The best action on the big trout has continued to be in Chris' Pond, but the Bubble Hole in the main lake is also a top bet. Dave Pierson, Anaheim, landed a 14-pounder fishing a jig and Crave Gravy, while Bernard Lopez, Paramount, caught a 12 3/4-pounder on a nightcrawler with Crave Gravy.

Tony Avila, La Habra, switched from trout to catfish and landed 10 nice fish that weighed a total of 49.6 pounds topped by a 10-pounder. Most were 3-0 to 5-0 and all were taken on shrimp.
The off conditions mean that many of the huge trout planted two weeks ago for the special Crave event are still in Chris' Pond, including at least two fish that will break the current lake and state record of 26.08-pounds. There is also a "BIG CASH BOUNTY" on the fish.
While the trophy rainbows are still the big draw, and most anglers expect a new record will probably be caught within a week or so as the water clears, the buzz this week is the special steelhead plants this week and next week for two special events featuring these hard-fighting trout.
The steelhead are renowned for their aerial, hard-fighting abilities, and these pink-meated trout will go into SARL for the first time this season this week for a Thursday through Sunday event, and they will be planted again next week for another four-day bash.
The lakes are open seven days a week. Anglers can fish from 6 a.m. to 4 pm. on day passes, or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each pass has a five-fish limit.
