We are taking our scout troop camping next weekend. Originally we were going to Strawberry but we are concerned about the cold. We are thinking about Mantua. Is there anywhere near the lake to camp (build snow caves, tents, etc)? I have never fished there so I need all the help I can get (where to go, what to use, etc).....

you cant camp near mantua.. acey took a scout group up there a few weeks ago and the police came and told them there was not camping... I am not sure where you can camp but I think there will be a problem if you camp at mantua..

If camping at Mantua is not possible, ***Do any of you have reccomendations to a place to camp and ice fish????? Thanks

Current Creek! Or see what you can do for winter camping at Jordanelle-Rock Cliff side!

I agree, currant creek would be a great idea... plus the fishing it great right now..

I agree with Polo, Rock Cliffs at Jordanelle would be good if it is open for winter camping.

Rockport has winter camping, but the fishing is slow.

Currant Creek may be as cold as Strawberry.

Good Luck,

Last winter our scouts (16 and older) went and spent the night in the MudCreek parking lot at Strawberry. Activities were snowmobiling, ice fishing and tubing.
I didn't spend the night that time, I arrived in the morning. Temps were near zero and they all did ok with tents and heaters and such.
Don't know if I would recommend that for youngsters (12 year olds) however.
You can camp in the mudcreek parking lot, no fee right now.

Not sure about Jordanelle. That is where they hold the Klondike Derby camp for scouts (though I am not sure where on the lake) but the scout are prohibited to go out on the ice. You should just call up there, they would certainly be able to help you.

It's too cold for overnighters with the Scouts. Just leave early and go for the day. That's what I used to do with the Scouts, and they enjoyed it more than camping.

[black]Where you coming from? Bear Lake on Cisco Beach is a camping area with pretty good outhouses. You could dip net cisco next weekend and then ice fish right there. If you have RV's you can take them too. It would be all tent camping. There is a scant amount of snow there right now.[/black]

I agree with UintaIce. I taken plenty of basic and advance winter survival classes and spent considerable time during the winter out on multi day camps on X-country skis, sleeping in ice caves, melting snow for water; all of it when I was younger. I've gone out with scouts and showed them the proper ways to build snow caves and survive. Rarely do the kids enjoy it.

They'd rather have a good time while it's relatively warm and the activities are less like work. You know how may half built snow caves get built? 95% of the kids are so ill equipped for the cold conditions, they have no business being out there in the first place. After training, it's a game of the proper equipment that most families don't have. Most, including the advisers, end up back in the cars with the heaters on just trying to make it till morning. Hope your winter camp works out better than most I've seen.

Yea what BLM said. I remember one where we were told a good old fashion ble tarp works great as a barrier between you and the snow. God that was a cold night. Since than i enjoy the winter camping on learning of Thermarest and ridgerest sleeping pads.

I would try the camp ground at the inlet of East Canyon.

EC is a good choice. It's been utilized a lot by scouts and others camping both at the park entrance, and around the inlet side. There was a big Klondike group at the inlet this weekend. However, be aware that it is $9 to camp at the park / boat ramp area.

I would second this suggestion.

That is, the suggestion to just go for the day.
