Last night I got a pamphlet in the mail from the "June Sucker Recovery Implementation Program".
In it, one of the things mentioned was that they did another carp netting experiment in or around November to see if the catch rate was better during colder months. It seems they still plan to find a way to remove hundreds of thousands of pounds of carp from the lake a year if they can, and to find a useful way to dispose of the carp.
Another thing they mentioned was a 2007 work plan, which included:
- Additional studies to remove carp
- Determine economic and commercial uses for Utah Lake carp
- Evaluate the role of nonnative fish predators/competitors on June Sucker survival in Utah Lake
It is this last one that concerns me. Let's hope this study doesn't translate into "We need to wipe out the walleye, white bass and catfish along with the carp"!
I realize anything of that nature is a long way of if ever, but it is a concern.
They also mentioned habitat improvements along Hobble Creek, lower Provo River, etc. and also "Finalize design and NEPA compliance for growth of June Sucker in a protected refuge area proximally connected to Utah Lake.
The 2007 work plan, and I'm sure a lot more info about all of this, is available at the following url:
