Yesterday (Thursday) about 2:00 I drove up the East side of the Bear. Several folks were at Cisco Beach dipping nets through the ice. My friend and I stopped and walked down to visit and check out the results they were having. The Cisco were coming through pretty fair but not real hot. When I got to the Casa I picked up the dip net and took my friend back to get his fair share (I have plenty left over from last year). We arrived in time to dip for about the last hour of daylight. It was pretty slow at that time of day.

The whole lake is now capped. Ice at Cisco Beach is about 2 to 3 inches thick. There is a great variance of ice thickness from area to area so be careful if you go. Right at Sundown the ice starts playing some pretty loud music.

Refer to BLFG post on Bear Lake on the Utah Board for more info.

Joyride,
My family is from Bear Lake. Unfortunately, I have never done much fishing down there. I am curious though, as to whether there are fish in Bloomington Lake.

Also, does anybody successfully float tube Bear Lake, or are there too many water craft there?

We also used to play in the "bottoms" when I was a kid and went down there to visit my cousins. Seems the Bear river runs somewhere through there. Any decent fishing there? I thought there was perch?

JoyRide,

Thanks for the report. Good to see you are still around.

Bdn06,

The most popular stretch of the Bear River to fish is in the Grace area and the stretch that is just upstream from Preston. Most other parts of the Bear River are not very good fishing. I've only fished the Bear River in a few places so take what I have written with a grain of salt. Other guys who post here know much more than I do about the Bear River. I caught a few small trout out of Bloomington Lake last summer. If I was looking for an Alpine Lake fishing experience I would go somewhere else.

bdn06 ... I've not fished Bloomington Lake but heard of other people doing fair for the small planters.

The float tubers on the Utah board have discussed fishing around the old and new rock piles and the marina area. It seems that their consencous was that if the weather was watched closely and you don't get too far from shore it is a doable thing. It would probably be wise to go during the week to avoid all the fishing boats in the spring and fall and the hell raisers in the summer. In the hotter months you may be able to fish on the East side where it is deeper closer to the bank, but the wind can come up in a hurry. Luckily it usually pushes you toward the shore ... and rocks.

This is just my observations as I'm not a tuber. You should check with the Tubers on the Utah or Tubing board.

The Bear River can be fished successfuly upstream of Mud Lake to the Wyo border or, as Bryan said, in the Black Canyon area upstream of Oneida Res. Lots of folks fish the Narrows below Oneida Res. as well for Browns, Rainbow, Walleye, and Small Mouth Bass. Trying to fish anywhere between Mud Lake and downstream toward Soda would involve trying to keep the carp and suckers off your line while hunting for a game fish.

Thanks for all the info. It doesn't sound like an ideal tubing experience, at least not worth the long drive for just that. But when I come to visit the parents in Paris this summer, I will have to figure something out for fishing Smile

Post here or slide me a PM when you're headed this way. I'm sure you would get updates on current conditions and possibly meet up with someone to catch a fish or two.

Will do--thanks! That sounds great [cool]

We were there on Saturday and picked up our limits in 15 minutes, they were in there thick. We also saw Fish1on there but he left after getting his limit. We moved out twenty yards or so into deeper water, this fat cutt was caught there, stuffed with cisco. WH2

Don't you just fry up the cisco? Aren't they kind of like herring?
Or do you can them?

I've never eaten herring but I'm sure they are simular to cisco. Some of the folks in Garden city put on a cisco fry every year, they call it the "Cisco Disco". They have deep fried cisco, scones and fries and they have that great Bear lake Rasberry jam to go on the scones, great stuff. Never tried canning them, I use most of them for bait during the year when fishing at Bear lake. WH2

I must have been walking down to the ice as you were going to get scones[unsure]. I had just walked to the spot by Pat when I saw him, I'm sure if you and BLM were near by I would have seen you. Next year we'll have to plan a time and place to meet. I had to get back and go to work in the afternoon or I could have fished longer for the big fish[cool]
