I have never been to the Gorge, but am concidering trying it out with hopes of catching burbout, small lake trout and hopefully kokani. I would appreciate any information regarding how it's "catching" up there, where to go to try it out and what to use. I have no snowmobile nor 4 wheeler/4wheeldrive, so that will have to be concidered in any recomendations. I'd be traveling from Layton; any recommendations as to where to spend the night ?

Thanks in advance.

One piece of advice: If you catch some burbout, smack the hell out of it on the side of your boat or on the ice. Get those little nasties out of there.

to late man thay are hear to stay suck's but it's fact green river would be the place to stay with no wheeler or 4x4 you are going to have to walk your butt off and I dont think you can get into fire hole buckboard would be your best bet.

hey guys Don't get caught fishing with perch in the gorge as they are gamefish in wyoming. IF you get caught it will be a huge fine plus maybe even jail time. at the gorge they have zero tollerance for game and fish violations. also if you don't have a 4X4 I would go to buckboard boat ramp as the road is plowed to the ramp. all the other side roads are packed with snow and some 4X4's have even been stuck. as for ling try in the boat ramp area and way back in the bay by the ramp. I have seen the reports from the game and fish and they have netted some ling and anglers have caught them there. watch the ice right around the docks as they have those air pumps to keep the ice open or just thin ice around them. Try fishin early in the morning and late in the afternoon and into the night for ling. I have caught them on small jigs with suckermeat throught the ice. fish around any structure that you can find if possible ling at the gorge like rocks etc. I have caught them in 15 to 55 feet of water. have fun and good luck. trfishin

I would appreciate any information regarding how it's "catching" up there, where to go to try it out and what to use. You can drive into Firehole Canyon no problem. The road is paved and plowed. It's also well traveled. Just head south on Hwy 191 out of Rock Springs. There is a sign for Firehole Canyon heading west. Just follow the road down to the lake and park on the launch. Make sure you have a gas auger though, ice was 14-18 inches last week. Glow jigs and spoons from 1/4-1/2 oz have caught fish. Tip them with frozen sucker meat for lakers and burbot, or meal worm for rainbows. Fish close to the bottom for the lakers and burbot, and around 15-20ft for suspended rainbows. Make sure you have a Wyoming reciprocal stamp if you're up at Buckboard or Firehole.

Rock Springs is close, about 30-45 minutes from Firehole Canyon. If you fish Buckboard, as some of the other anglers have recommended, you would definitely be better off staying in Green River. If there isn't any storms, you shouldn't need a 4-wheel drive. Driving in on Firehole or Buckboard road is pretty uneventful, they keep those roads relatively clear.
