Thought I'd ask the members in here their opinion about a portable fishfinder? I know you pretty much get what you pay for, but for someone who doesn't want to spend big bucks on a fishfinder, I'm wondering about these portabale finders. Any opinions would be helpful. Thanks!

Don't do it... you'd be further ahead if you simply gave TubeDude the $99.00 and had him point you to some fish-
Save for a little longer and get a quality flasher like Vexlar or Marcum or Lowrance...
It'll pay off for ya in the long run...PB

[size 3]I am curious as to [#ff0000]WHAT[/#ff0000]. How about some in put. I am interested more in a fish finder. Something one could use on ice (if you're crazy enough to like that stuff [laugh][laugh][laugh][laugh]) and stillwater in the ice off stages.
I am ready for an upgrade and I am thinking color (due to the fact they have really come down in price and I hear they are the BOMB!)
Seems to me with one of those small rechargeable batteries and some PVC you could make any fish finder ICE friendly[
].

Looking on Ebay, there are lots of good models to choose from. Some at a decent price. Humminbird piranamax series is what I'm eyeing...but I'll do some more research before buying one. Looking at a price-range around $100.00-140.00 so I'll keep shopping.
Anyone have any input on the piranamax series or other models? What to look for, etc.?
Thanks in advance,
Derek

flygodess ... When I decided to look for color I found the Humminbird 787c to be the least expensive quality unit at $600+. I now have one on my big boat. The Lowrance etc. were all at least a couple hundred more.
As for a decent portable ice finder (look in my Scotch glass) I'd do what has been suggested here on other threads and find a good used unit someone has taken off their boat and mount it in a container (most use a cooler). There are pictures on some threads to help accomplish this task.

Pass on this finder unless you have the money to throw away. I purchased one of the earlier hawkeye models and it lasted me 2 fishing trips before it quit working. If you wan't an affordable finder make one your self. I bought a eagle cuda 168 this year for 69.00 and made it ice worthy for approx 100.00 after purchasing a toolbox 12v adaptor and battery.

I had a post on the board about the Fishin Buddy 4200 about a week ago and the members told me it was not worth the money. I went to Sportsmans Warehouse and they had some great color units with "real time" for about $350 - $400, color and large screens. Real time for ice fishing would be really fun. I hope this helps you. You can find alot of color units for far less than $600 plus. Check it out. I am going back this week to decide which one I am going to rig on my toon boat.

[font "Comic Sans MS"][black][size 2]Thanks, I have seen them from $250 up on the net, just got to get some feedback on which one. I have been visiting the CA. boards with friend that use them on their charter rigs. Maybe take their last years model, let them write it off and get a new one LOL.[/size][/black][/font]

I've used the Hawkeye unit for a couple of years and it works fine. I'd say it is more of a fish indicator. It may not have all the bells & whistles as other units, but it does work. I just load fresh AAA batteries for each trip. Much more convenient than lugging a 12 volt car battery.
