The cisco spawning run is winding down but there are still quite a few cisco running at Cisco Beach and it should go through the weekend. As of Friday, January 26, 2007 limits of cisco were still being dipnetted off of Cisco Beach but the numbers of fish were thinning out. The run is just about over at the Utah State Park marina. The ice off the Bear Lake State Park marina and Ideal Beach area is approximately 4-7” thick and ice anglers are reporting catching some nice cutthroat trout lake trout in deeper water. Try 85-115 feet deep. A few cisco are still being snagged off the Rockpile at Ideal Beach in about 35-40 feet of water. Anglers are also just beginning to catch a few whitefish here and off the weed beds south of Gus Rich Point and on the east side off the pump house. Jig small lures such as Swedish Pimples tipped with a waxworm or salmon egg for the whitefish. Use tube jigs or largers Swedish Pimples and Castmaster-type lures for the cutthroat trout and lake trout. Tip the lures with cisco or sucker meat. Cisco can be jigged (snagged) by using lures such as Swedish pimples, castmasters, and spoons. Remember a person may not possess a multipoint hook with a weight permanently or rigidly attached directly to the shank or a weight suspended below any hook unless the hook is on an unweighted dropper line that is at least three inches long. This is to prevent other fish, such a whitefish and cutthroat trout from being inadvertently snagged. Any fish that is foul hooked other than a cisco must be immediately released. Remember to watch out for springs and or methane vents which make or weak ice in some area and keep some areas wide open. Also STAY AWAY FROM SHELFED UP ICE. IT IS NOT SAFE! As an added safety measure, wear a set of ice picks around your neck on the outside of your clothing. The picks will help you to pull yourself out of the water if you should fall through. It is also a good idea to keep a length of rope with your ice fishing equipment as an additional safety measure. There is approximately 4” of snow on the ground at this time and night time temperatures continue to drop to zero or below but daytime temperatures have been in the 20’s. Get out of the inversion in the valleys and come up to Bear Lake and enjoy some sunshine! By "there" do you mean at Cisco Beach? I am headed over to Bear Lake in the morning and was going to hit the east side, but I was wondering how thick the ice was. Last saturday it wasn't nearly thick enough at Cisco Beach (at least for me anyway).

We fished the East Side just North of Second Point and had 8 or so inches of ice out at 90'. Had plenty bites but couldn't hook but one Cut.

Thanks for the reports. I am going to head up on monday. Do you thing the cisco will still be catchable/nettable?

We were there yesterday and the cisco were in pretty good in the morning but were really thin when we were leaving in the evening.I tried to replentish my limit after fishing all day and it took longer to do than catching the whole limit. By monday first light would be your best chance try a big black tube jig to attract them.
