Well it was decided today was the day to hit the pig. Myself, Lil'Lunkerhunter and a good friend got to the lake at 8 am. From all the reports about kokes by the dam we headed there. We fished on the niorth side about 200 yards from the dam in 76' of water. First drop a nice 15 1/2" brown. Nothing for almost an hour and then all hell broke loose. I have never seen anything like what happened over the next hour in my life. There were kokes coming up the holes chasing our jigs. We had a total of 7 rods going back and forth. Catch one, throw that rod and drop another. Back and forth almost non stop for an hour. We limited in no time and only threw 2 back that were dinks. The fish were from the ice down about 30' but most were right under the ice as Packfan said. Unbelievable! My 3 year old was dumbfounded at the fish down the ice holes swimming around. The biggest we caught was a 12"er but most were about 11".
The ice is rapidly deteriorating and will not last long. The edges are getting very soft and there is some water on the whole lake. Very slick. You must have a 4x4 to get to the dam as the ice and mud is pretty bad. Ice was still good away from the edges. About 11".If you want to fish the pig you better get up there tomorrow or saturday or pray for colder weather. I'll attach pics in a few.

Nice report LH2!!!

I think I'll take my 4 yr old girl and head up there in the morning. Maybe I'll run into Packfan.

This might be my last chance at catching some Kokes, and even though I work swing shift, who cares if I miss out on some sleep! heheh

Great pics!!

Take a folding ladder or a good long plank, It was very warm up there today. Better safe than sorry. Also, if you have a pfd for your daughter make her wear it till you get to your spot.

Great report Brody, sounds like an awesome day on the ice. I hope we do as good tomorrow. Did you catch any more browns after that first fish?
[signature]
Had one hooked and another hit. The browns were right on the bottom.

What time did you leave today and did you need ice cleats?

[black][size 3]Very nice report and pictures. I would have been hanging out with your son in the tent watching ICE AGE MELT DOWN or something[laugh] I figure I would be exhausted after putting up a fight to even get me on the ice [crazy][/size][/black]

Looks like a great time was had by all. Sounds like a fun place to take my Porta-Bote to in a month or two.

Very dumb question but where is Porcupine?

Here you go, you can read all about it:

So after looking at my map I'm not sure I can get there this time of year without going all the way to Hyrum and then back down. Coming from Utah county that is quite the drive[unsure]. Is that my only option right now or is the road up from Liberty doable?
[signature]
Yes it is!! As everyone else has said you need 4 wheel drive to go up the road just before the dam because of the ice on the road!
[signature]
The road on the liberty side is not doable this time of year. You will have to go around. YEs you more than likely will need 4x4 to get that last 1/4 mile up the hill to the dam. it could be froze in the early am but when it warms up it could get snotty.

I have never eaten kokanee before, how are they and do they taste like trout???
[signature]
kokanee are way better than trout! they are, in my opinion, the best there is as far as fresh water fish goes.
[signature]
even if itwasnt. it dosent save you any time you are alot better of going to hyrum any way.the roads are bettter and you can drive alot faster.done both ways many times and the highway is the way. the only way the liberty road would be faster is if you lived in liberty.

Just returned from Porcupine, the roads are fine, you don't need a 4X4 to reach the lake. You might need a ladder to get on the ice by tomorrow, the edges are going fast. Fishing was great, Headed back up in the A.M.[cool]

[Wink] I have taken my kokes and cleaned all the scales off and then soaked them in a brine over night. Then smoked them up. OMG are they the best eatin fish you will ever have.
